PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
1. The purpose is to provide South Africa with African graduates with advanced knowledge and competencies in human rights law, who are able to apply the Bill of Rights as an instrument of social reconstruction in the particular context of post-apartheid South Africa. To produce human rights lawyers who will be able to take up leadership positions in the human rights sector.

2. Secondly, to expose students to the complexities associated with the complexity of human rights in a world of variegated perceptions and goals of human rights and state practice.

3. Thirdly, the qualification contributes to the realisation of the vision of the African Renaissance by its knowledge base and focus on Continental African themes of human rights

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
Content, Competencies and the Project will be assessed:

Assessment and content:

The students will receive a mark for presentations in the seminars during the year (25%) and a mark for a written examination (25%): total of 50% for this component


Assessment of competencies:

Competencies will be orally assessed and in the context of the project 10% disciplinary and 10% university core: total of 20% for his component.

Assessment of the project: 22,5% for the written report and 7,5% for the oral presentation: total of 30% for this component. To pass a subminimum of 40% is needed in each of the three components (content, competencies and projects).

A student who fails one of the components will be allowed to repeat only that component
