Purpose:
To provide learners acquiring this qualification with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attributes to: Rationale: This qualification is offered as a Postgraduate program at University of Venda (Univen) after the successful completion of the Bachelor of Arts in Criminology. Univen has successfully delivered graduates of this programme in the last few years. Graduates work in various fields ranging from the South African Police Service, Department of Justice, Department of Correctional Services and at Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO's) like the Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Centre etc. |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
RPL is conducted in terms of the official RPL policy of the University of Venda. Entry Requirements: A graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice (BACRM) of the University of Venda or another recognised University with an academic average of at least 60%. |

QUALIFICATION RULES |
There are two options in this qualification:
Option 1, Criminology 5000: The curriculum comprises of four year modules of 25 Credits each (two compulsory modules and two electives) and a research Dissertation of 30 Credits. The modules are as follows: Option 2, Policing Studies 5000: The curriculum comprises of four compulsory year modules of 25 Credits each and a Research Dissertation of 30 Credits. The modules are as follows: All the modules in both options are offered at Level 8. |
EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES |
1. Conduct a limited research project (mini dissertation) aimed at a conflict, deviance, policing and victimisation problem.
2. Assess policing, conflict, deviance, crime and victimisation risk and vulnerability. 3. Evaluate the functioning of justice systems. 4. Develop and analyse policing, deviance, crime, conflict and victimisation policies. |

INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY |
The Bachelor of Arts Honours in Criminal Justice offered by the University of Venda is comparable to similar national and international degrees offered by institutions like the University of Limpopo, University of KwaZulu Natal, University of South Africa (UNISA), University of New South Wales, Griffith University and the Western Sydney University. The Degree is accredited with the Higher Education Quality Committee of the Council for Higher Education in South Africa. |
