Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of the qualification is to provide learners with a professional qualification and detailed knowledge, understanding and skills in the collection, storage, retrieval, dissemination and use of information. The qualification will enable learners to:
  • Identify critical problems and provide solutions in information issues in the public and private sector.
  • Produce reports; develop professional working relations during placements.
  • Be equipped with management skills required to plan and organise information/library services.

    Rationale: 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    This qualification allows for Recognition of Prior Learning for a leaner to attain entry/access to this qualification and to gain exemptions from some qualification requirements. Where an entry criterion applies, a prospective leaner may use prior learning experience in the field of public health to gain entry to the qualification. Submission of a Portfolio of Evidence as proof of practical experience from an appropriate setting will enable the learner admission to the qualification. Access to the qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning is possible if the learner produces evidence of having achieved the appropriate outcomes level of knowledge, skill, and competence. Access to the qualification is achievable if the learner can provide formal proof of credits earned towards the outcomes from an accredited service provider.

    Entry Requirements:
    The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Senior Certificate (SC) with endorsement.
  • National Senior Certificate (NSC), NQF Level 4, granting access to Bachelor's studies.

    QUALIFICATION RULES 
    This qualification consists of the following compulsory and elective modules at National Qualifications Framework Levels 5, 6, 7 and 8 totalling 480 Credits. 

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    1. Perform the essential technical functions of an information service.
    2. Exhibit a detailed knowledge and understanding of the information phenomenon and information users.
    3. Exhibit critical and creative thinking, problem solution and leadership qualities in an information service.
    4. Show knowledge of management such as financial and human resources, strategic planning and public relations.
    5. Display knowledge and understanding of systems theory and the analysis and design of systems.
    6. Demonstrate competence in computer technology as a tool in visual presentations, storage and analysis of data and information, written and graphic work, and in modelling information systems.
    7. Create and use bibliographic control tools for information retrieval.
    8. Organise and manage oneself and ones activities effectively to contribute to full personal development.
    9. Work effectively as a member of a team, group or organisation. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The Associated Assessment Criteria will assess the Exit Level Outcomes in an integrated manner.
  • Collect, process, retrieve, disseminate, and store information.
  • Study the behaviour of the users and come up with possible solutions to users' problems.
  • Evaluate performance during placement (fieldwork).
  • Deal with management case studies, draw up budgets and design a promotion plan for a library service.
  • Analyse existing systems and design new systems.
  • Effectively and critically use and manage computer software programmes, during practical sessions in the university library and placement (fieldwork).
  • Use creative thinking in designing and constructing bibliographic tools.
  • Adhere to deadlines and attend lectures and practical sessions.
  • Evaluate personal development by conducting personal interviews and monitoring results.

    Assignments, discussions, brainstorming sessions, debates, research projects, seminars, visual and oral presentations placements.

    Summative Assessment:
    Formal tests and examination. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    This qualification is comparable to international qualifications.

    This qualification allows possibilities for both vertical and horizontal articulation.
