Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This qualification aims to recognise those who, over several years, have made a distinguished, original contribution through scientific research pertinent to their field of endeavour. The qualification enhances the career of the qualified learner by conferring on him/her the highest academic Degree of the institution in the field of study. Further, the purpose of the qualification is to produce a qualified learner who, by the production of a substantial body of knowledge in the field, contributes both nationally and internationally. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
Learning achieved by meeting the outcomes of qualification of the institution listed below (under Formally Accredited Learning) is assumed to be in place - to view the outcomes, consult the Interim Registration submission to SAQA for the relevant qualification. The typical applicant has extensive research experience and output, either accepted for publication or published, and usually, a post qualified qualification of the institution in a dental discipline, or equivalent qualification(s), of several years' standing.

Learners who fall outside of the regular admissions process who can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the institution that they have a qualification or experiential or work work-based learning which has taken the learner to an equivalent level of a qualification specified above (under Formally Accredited Learning), may be considered for admission and/or for the recognition of prior accredited and/or prior experiential learning.

Entry Requirements:
  • Master of Dentistry, NQF Level 9.
  • Master of Dentistry in Community Dentistry, NQF Level 9.

    QUALIFICATION RULES 
    This qualification consists of the following compulsory and elective modules at Level 10 totalling 360 Credits.

    Compulsory Module, 360 Credits:
  • Dissertation, 360 Credits. 

  • EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    1. Access and process information responsibly using a range of appropriate technologies.
    2. Communicate and produce information responsibly using a range of appropriate technologies.
    3. Analyse and solve the problem critically.
    4. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of methods and relevant literature appropriate to research and a mastery of relevant techniques.
    5. Contribute substantial and original scholarly work to the international body of knowledge in their field.
    6. Show an understanding of their ethical obligations.
    7. Assess the significance of their work.
    8. Demonstrate his/her authority in the chosen field of research. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The following associated assessment criteria apply across all Exit Level Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate, through a coordinated compendium of original, published work (or work accepted for publication) submitted for examination, a distinguished contribution to international research.

    Integrated Assessment:
    The assessment of the compendium of work referred to in Associated Assessment Criteria above represents an integrated assessment. The learner is awarded the qualification on approval of submission of a portfolio of original published work (or work accepted for publication) in a focused area. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    This qualification compares with the following international qualifications in terms of the range of competencies in the learning content offered.
