Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The qualification will expose learners to highly advanced reading, writing and research characterised by intellectual independence. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners are expected to have a Level 9 (Masters) qualification, in Afrikaans. Learners who have obtained a mark of less than 60% in this qualification will not usually be admitted to Afrikaans Doctors.

In the course of this research and writing learners will acquire:
1. A great depth of knowledge in a complex and specialised area.
2. The capacity for dealing with complexity, lacunae, and/or contradictions in the knowledge, base, and making confident selections of tools for the job.
3. The ability for autonomous synthesising of information and the creation of responses to problems that expand or redefine existing knowledge.
4. The ability for independent evaluation of and argument for alternative approaches.
5. The ability to isolate, assess, and resolve problems in an autonomous manner.
6. The ability for full professional and academic communication with others in the field of study.
7. The ability to produce a thesis that places research within the broader context of the field, is capable of withstanding international intellectual scrutiny, and contributes original knowledge to the field of Afrikaans studies.

Learners are expected to produce a thesis on an approved subject.

MODERATION OPTIONS 
Moderation will be done both within the Department, and with the help of the external assessors. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
Internal assessors must be employed as academic or research staff at the University, and have appropriate qualifications (a Doctor's Degree). External assessors must be or have been employed as academic or research staff at other institutions, and must have a Doctor's Degree in Afrikaans.
