PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The Bachelor Business Administration (BBA) in Retail Management contributes directly to enhancing the management and leadership potential of learners. The purpose of this qualification is to develop employable professionals with a sound understanding of how retail organisations function. The qualification develops managers by equipping them with the relevant skills, knowledge and self awareness to work effectively across the various functional areas in a retail organisation. Upon qualifying the learner will be able to:
  • Develop, implement and monitor a retail business strategy using the strategic planning process.
  • Apply strategic human resource management models to the retail environment.
  • Develop a marketing and sales strategy for a retail business.
  • Analyse and develop a retail store's performance and strategies for improvement of profitability and cash flow.
  • Develop a retail business plan.

    Rationale:
    The BBA in Retail Management has been developed for people who need to know how retail organisations function, through an in-depth investigation of key retail management functions and an interrogation of what it takes to manage such functions.

    The intended outcome of this qualification is to develop retail managers with the relevant management skills to perform their roles and responsibilities more effectively, and to create a career progression for such learners.

    The BBA in Retail Management will assist learners who are new to the retail environment as well as those who have been working for some time in retail businesses to be able to move into general management. It offers career opportunities for learners by broadening their understanding of local and international retail business administration and management practices, so they are able to generate and implement integrated plans, and make decisions based on a holistic understanding of organisational structure, systems, culture and strategy.

    In the context of the high demand for managerial skills and knowledge of the systemic interrelatedness of organisational functions, the BBA in Retail Management directly addresses the needs of the South African economic context. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    Applicants wishing to be admitted to the Bachelor of Business Administration in Retail Management qualification through RPL must submit a portfolio of evidence which comprises inter-alia, work related experience and training, testimonials mentioning functions performed, work records, videos of practice and performance records, etc. All such evidence would be considered and evaluated according to the institution's RPL Policy. As per National guidelines, 10% of the intake will comprise RPL applicants.

    Integrated Assessment:
    The objective of integrated assessment in the Bachelor of Business Administration in Retail Management qualification is to assess whether the learners have acquired the necessary general management skills to effectively manage a retail business. Assessment in this case is done in two forms, namely; formative and summative. The assignment serves as formative assessment. The learning activities and questions included in the study guide form part of the informal formative assessment process to enhance learning.

    The one examination per module will serve as a summative assessment. The summative assessment is conducted internally by the provider, and used to assess the overall achievement of the exit level outcomes.

    In conclusion it is clear from the comparison conducted that there are countries which offer BBA Retail Management qualification which entails retail management in the last year as a specialisation. The current BBA Retail Management is done as a complete qualification and that makes it unique from those of other countries.
