The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The qualification is designed to:
  • To train competent professionals who will be able to raise the standard of sport, sport participation and development in the country and in the relevant provinces.
  • To train professionals in the fields of sport, sport management (clubs and teams), sport marketing, entrepreneurship and attaining sponsorships.
  • To provide opportunities and career pathways for individuals interested in following a career in sport management, as well as in taking on responsibilities of sport in communities.

    Rationale:
    Sport is generally recognised to contribute positively to the development of youth - physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually. These outcomes can only be realised if sport is informed, innovative, and eventful by managers. In post independent South Africa, it has become apparent that a sport management qualification is desirable to individuals in the field of sport given the wider range of problems facing the sports development in the country. The problems include scarcity of technical and administrative sports personnel and relevant training in sport.

    Specifically the Advanced Diploma in Sport Management is designed to train Sport Managers and Administrators in the theory and good practice of sport management focusing on:
  • Managing sports/people/programmes.
  • Sport consultation.
  • Sport entrepreneur (good and services).
    The qualification also specifically trains competent professionals in sport management who will assist in promoting the standard of sport and encourage sport participation in South Africa, as well as develop the necessary manpower needed in sport for diverse settings- Schools, Clubs and Sports Federations. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    RPL is one of the admission requirements. That is, learners that have sport related experience of not less than 5 years or with other related sport experiences such as working with athletes, sport federations, sports organisations, will be assessed for registration of the qualification.

    This qualification comprises of compulsory modules at NQF Level 7, totalling 120 Credits:
  • Sport Research Project (Experiential Training), 30 Credits.
  • Organisational Theories and Practices in Sport Management, 20 Credits.
  • Leadership in Sport Management, Decision making and Conflict Resolution, 10 Credits.
  • Resource Management in Sport, 10 Credits.
  • Sport Marketing, Sponsorship and Fund-raising, 20 Credits.
  • The Voluntary Sector: Management of Voluntary Sports, 10 Credits.
  • Event Management, Competition Programming and Promotion, 10 Credits.
  • Sport Law, 10 Credits.

    1. Apply advanced knowledge of the theory and application of principles of sport management.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:
  • Relevant management and organisational theories and skills required by sports managers and administrators are acquired.
  • A clear understanding of the available resources within the community (people, personal, financial and administrative) for sports managers and administrators in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities is demonstrated.
  • Skills and competence of sport management for diverse settings - Schools, Colleges, Universities, Sports federations, Clubs and Sports organisations is applied.
  • Strategies adopted by sports organisers to source funds to complement whatever sectional allocation is given to the sports sector in view of the world resources is understood.
  • Skills and competencies required of a professional to guide against the litigious challenges within the field of sport are understood.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:
  • Practical ability in evaluating and assessing the competency of individuals and sports personnel is demonstrated.
  • Practical ability in management of sports infrastructures - both outdoor and indoor is evaluated.
  • Ability to assess sports programmes in terms of their effectiveness, success/failure is demonstrated.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:
  • Participation in competitions, meetings and sporting activities is conducted.
  • Leadership is demonstrated whereby decision-making and conflict resolution is applied.
  • A sports clinic is established and managed.
  • Acquired knowledge and values in entrepreneurial activities is demonstrated.
  • Information is collected, analysed and interpreted in order to make informed decisions.
  • A clear understanding of the available resources within the community (people, personal, financial and administrative) for sports managers and administrators in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities is demonstrated.
  • Skills and competence of sport management for diverse settings - Schools, Colleges, Universities, Sports federations, Clubs and Sports organisations is applied.
  • Strategies adopted by sports organisers to source funds to complement whatever sectional allocation is given to the sports sector in view of the world resources is understood.
  • Skill and competency in purchases and supplies for sports is displayed.

    Integrated Assessment:
    An integrated assessment approach is incorporated into the qualification to integrate theory and practice through formative and summative assessment processes.

    Theory:
    Class tests, semester tests, final examinations, essays/assignments, oral presentations and simulations.

    Practicals:
    Write-ups, projects, practical tests and examinations and simulations.

    Experiential learning:
    Learners have to:
  • Gain as much experience of the workplace as possible.
  • Learn to be efficient and to conduct necessary work and management in the workplace.
  • Gain and maintain self-confidence.
  • Demonstrate practical coaching and refereeing.
  • Organise sport events.
  • Be able to do administrative work regarding Sport Management.
  • Conduct fieldwork in recreation and outdoor adventure. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    This qualification can be compared to the following qualifications:
    The New Zealand of Institute of Sport (NZIS) offers the Diploma in Sport (Advanced Sport Management) which is a full-time, Level 7 tertiary qualification. Learners enter after the successful completion of their NZIS Diploma in Sport Management and Exercise Prescription or can qualify through the RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) system.

    Sport Management learners are able to practically apply what they learn during the year through the organisation of large commercial and non-profit events to gain valuable experience. Their event management skills are developed and improved through direct involvement in the planning and implementation of major multi-faceted events.

    Learners in Sport Management will qualify with transferable business skills in marketing, management, coaching and administration.

    Humber Lakeshore Campus, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada offers a Sport Management Advanced Diploma qualification which prepares learners to manage the business of sport.
    Learners will develop a thorough knowledge of the structure and functionality of the Canadian sports industry, including specific responsibilities and governance structure of organisations, rules and regulations governing sports, coaching standards, tournament hosting and scheduling and industry funding. They will also learn the practical, organisational, business, human resources and administrative skills needed to pursue a career in the industry.

    Conclusion:
    The Advanced Diploma in Sports Management compares favourably to the identified international qualifications in terms of the purpose of the qualifications and the qualifications develop similar skills and competences.

  • Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Sports Science at NQF Level 7.
  • Bachelor of Commerce in Recreation and Sport Management at NQF Level 7.

  • Bachelor of Arts Honours in Movement and Sport Science at NQF Level 8.
