PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Surface Coatings Technologist. A Surface Coatings Technologist develops surface coatings formulations, optimises existing surface coatings formulations and provides technical support services to surface coatings manufacturers and customers. A qualified learner will be able to: Rationale: South African Paint Manufacturing Association (SAPMA) has been in existence for over 70 years and represents the paint manufacturing industry as well as companies supplying goods and services to the paint industry. With the advent of new and imminent legislation being introduced pertaining to the coatings industry, a strategic decision was made to expand the membership of the association by way of the inclusion of the industry's all important distribution channels, namely the paint retailers and the painting contractors. The qualification is ideal for sales personnel, customer service staff, receptionists, and managers at all levels and laboratory staff who are following a technical career. Furthermore it is ideal for those who want to further their career in the paint manufacturing industry in directions such as: quality control, research and development, technical service, sales, buying, personnel and training, raw materials sales, coatings application, specification and inspection and specifically for those who are following a technical career path and in particular those in a laboratory environment. |

1. Apply the general principles of various coatings systems.
2. Apply formulation principles to design specific surface coatings product for a variety of applications and substrates. 3. Evaluate the performance of a surface coatings formulation and adjust to meet specification criteria. 4. Identify typical underlying causes of problems in surface coatings applications and recommend corrective action. 5. Interaction with clients in relation to surface coatings. 6. Develop a project plan for a product design and generate a comprehensive report. |

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:
Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2: Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3: Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4: Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5: Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 6: Integrated Assessment: Integrated Formative Assessment: The skills development provider will use the curriculum to guide them on the stipulated internal assessment criteria and weighting. They will also apply the scope of practical skills and applied knowledge as stipulated by the internal assessment criteria. This formative assessment leads to entrance into the integrated external summative assessment. External Integrated Summative assessment: An external integrated summative assessment, conducted through the relevant QCTO Assessment Quality Partner is required for the issuing of this qualification. The external integrated summative assessment will focus on the exit level outcomes and associated assessment criteria. |
INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY |
The British Coatings Federation (BCF) has acknowledged this qualification with an international award and the qualification offered by this federation has been used for comparability. The purpose of this qualification is to develop an understanding of surface coatings technology and includes: formulation for those working in a laboratory; manufacture and application of decorative and industrial coatings; ink formulation, manufacture and application; and powder coatings formulation, manufacture and application. It consists of a wide range of modules covering all aspects of coatings technology.
This qualification is divided into various levels, namely foundation, intermediate and advanced and covers aspects such as: Conclusion: The Occupational Certificate: Surface Coatings Technologist is similar to the BCF qualification as it covers all of the above aspects and the presentation methodology also includes the theoretical and practical skills aspects. However, it differs from the BCF qualification in terms of the inclusion of recognised work experience and the fact that it is presented in a modular manner and not according to the various levels of learning. |
