PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
. To develop research skills and enable student to under take research in areas of concern to the livelihoods of communities in South Africa.

. To develop the sense of independent thinking, analysis and judgement, with the view to mould fully responsible and mature researchers.

. To nurture a higher level of innovativeness and problem-solving qualities among students.

. To enhance and polish up the communication skills of students through research report and thesis writing, and the presentation of research papers in seminars and conferences.

A student can opt to change to the Master of Environmental Sciences in Pollution after having originally registered for the Master of Environmental Management research programme. 

MODERATION OPTIONS 
The panel of assessors should include representatives from academic, research institutions; government departments of Environmental Affairs, Water Affairs and Forestry; professional bodies and other environmental groups. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
PhD in Environmental Sciences/Management or related fields namely: Ecology, Geography, Planning, Earth Sciences and Natural Resource Management.

Research and tertiary institution teaching experience in the field indicated.

Membership of professional bodies that have relevance to environmental Management.
