PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

* To impart specialised scientific knowledge and skills in the following areas of environmental sciences: pollution and waste management; applied ecology and biodiversity management; environmental impact assessment, auditing and modelling; techniques of resource analysis and land information systems, and environmental economics and policy analysis.

* To develop innovativeness and problem-solving competencies of particular relevance to the areas of environmental sciences mentioned above.

* To develop leadership qualities in environmental issues including policy formulation, project planning and implementation as well as project evaluation.

* To develop research skills particularly in the areas of environmental sciences mentioned above.

* To mould professional environmental managers with appropriate skills, managerial acumen, ability to work with communities and foresight.

MODERATION OPTIONS

State measures to ensure that assessment is fair, reliable and valid:

* The panel of assessors should include representatives from academia, research institutions; government departments of Environmental Affairs, Water Affairs and Forestry; Professional bodies and other environmental groups/societies.

* The composition of the panel should be made known to the School, and possible the School should be allowed to voice out its concern.

PhD in Environmental Sciences/Management or related fields namely: Ecology, Geography, Planning, Earth Sciences and Natural Resource Management

Research and tertiary institution teaching experience in the fields indicated

Membership of professional bodies that have relevance to Environmental Management
