PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to be able to repair, maintain and install lubrication equipment and systems in accordance with a range of equipment and lubricant specifications.

A qualified learner will be able to:
  • Apply hand skills to perform mechanical engineering tasks using engineering tools and equipment.
  • Perform routine repairs and maintenance on lubrication equipment.
  • Repair, install and commission lubrication equipment/systems.

    Rationale:
    The Occupational Certificate in Lubrication Equipment Mechanic qualification is a unique response to the recent engineering-related developments in technology, specifically focusing on developments in lubrication equipment and systems in South Africa. Developments in this field have become highly technical and are associated with automated lubrication of a range of equipment used in various production processes.
    Lubrication of equipment and systems is characterised as engineering maintenance, repair and installation services to support a variety of industries. The equipment requiring such service and support ranges from sophisticated equipment to antiquated single station machines. People working on the lubrication of equipment and systems require specialised technical skills and knowledge, as well as highly developed repair and maintenance skills in order to meet the mechanical engineering requirements of the diverse industries.
    The qualification fits into the generally accepted career path of a mechanical trade. Thus allowing qualifying learners to seek employment as a tradesperson within the mechanical trades, such as Fitters (General) or Fitters and Turners.

  • Fabrication techniques and consequences if not adhered to can be explained for specific applications.
  • Work pieces are fabricated to specification.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:
  • Safe work procedures, precautions and Personal Protective Equipment required are described and adhered to.
  • Original Equipment Manufacturer specifications can be read and used for repair and maintenance of lubrication equipment.
  • Lubrication equipment are disassembled, cleaned and inspected for mechanical soundness.
  • Components are replaced and the lubrication equipment is assembled to manufacturer specification.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:
  • Safe work procedures, precautions and Personal Protective Equipment required for engineering maintenance tasks can be described.
  • Original Equipment Manufacturer specifications can be read and used for repair, installation and commissioning of lubrication equipment and systems.
  • Fault finding on lubrication equipment and systems are performed to manufacturer specifications.
  • Lubrication equipment and systems are repaired to manufacturer specifications.
  • Lubrication equipment and systems are installed and commissioned.
  • Lubrication equipment and systems are overhauled to manufacturer specifications.

    Integrated Assessment:
    The skills development provider will use the curriculum as a guide for the internal assessments (formative) by focussing on the stipulated internal assessment criteria and its weighting of the practical skills, knowledge and work experience modules. This formative assessment will enable a learner access into the integrated external summative assessment.
    The external summative assessment will be a trade test conducted in terms of Section 26 D of the Skills Development Act through an evaluation of written and practical tasks covering critical aspects of the trade and conducted in a simulated environment at an assessment centre accredited by QCTO and an assessor registered by National Artisan Moderation Body (NAMB). The assessment will take place over a minimum of 2 days.

Typically, this individual has regular contact with machinery and has routine influence over the condition of lubricants and hydraulic fluids in use.
