PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
Purpose:
As a Bachelor Honours Degree, the purpose of this qualification is to consolidate and deepen the learner's expertise in Multimedia Design, to develop research capacity and the application of the discipline's methodologies and techniques in terms of theory and practice. The qualification is focussed on preparing learners for both academic and design leadership. This is achieved by an emphasis on individuality (where students are encouraged to identify and pursue an area of speciality), independence (where students are encouraged to manage themselves and their work with greater independence and autonomy), and complexity (in that the scope of work requires greater maturity and responsibility as a designer.

Rationale:
Multimedia Design at the Institution is concerned primarily with interactive design and motion graphics. Interactive design includes applications development, web design, and physical computing; whilst motion graphics includes animated graphics and corporate identities, and title sequences. It is seen as a field of design that stemmed from traditional Graphic Design or Visual Communication Design, but that commonly uses digital or electronic platforms and interfaces as its media. Multimedia design typically concerns the design of a single product or artefact such as a website that is accessed by many different users or viewers. As a postgraduate qualification, the rationale for the qualification is to further the academic discipline of Multimedia Design which has its roots as a vocational discipline. The Institution is therefore supporting the move to reinforce the academic nature of Design which is an objective of the international body for visual communication. The qualification is designed to feed General/Academic and a Professional Master's Degree in Design, allowing students to pursue either stream in South Africa.

Candidates with a Postgraduate qualification are also able to enter the industry in more senior positions having a more sophisticated portfolio that demonstrates their ability to conceptualise and complete design projects independently and showcases their particular interest and area of speciality.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The Institution's policy on Recognition of Prior Learning caters for admission into the programme based on an assessment of previous learning. The system also caters for the recognition of credits obtained through studies at other higher education providers. As detailed in the RPL policy, applicants are required to submit a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates that they have competences equivalent to eligible GDC students.

Entry Requirements:
Admission is reserved for:
  • Candidates that have completed their undergraduate Degree in Graphic Design and must have achieved an overall aggregate 65% or higher.
    Or
  • Candidate with a relevant Bachelor Degree in the same field deemed appropriate by the institution.

  • RECOGNISE PREVIOUS LEARNING?

    2. Effectively engage in the design process to generate design solutions to multifaceted and complex design problems.
    3. Communicate information effectively, showing an awareness of audience and using academic and professional discourse and media appropriately.
    4. Conduct credible research (empirical or theoretical) that has direct application to Visual Communication Design problems.
    5. Demonstrate critical evaluation of theories, knowledge claims and processes of knowledge production in visual communication design and visual culture.
    6. Articulate a personal identity and philosophy as a designer.
    7. Demonstrate independent, self-regulated learning.
    8. Demonstrate accountability for own decisions, work and behaviours as a designer.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:
  • A brief which identifies and analyses the complexity of the problem is developed.
  • The expectations of client and intended target audience are addressed in the brief.
  • The concept is firmly established and planned for (this may include the development of roughs and scamps).
  • All elements of the final design solution (including stylistic elements, materials and substrates, printing processes etc) are well considered and justifiable.
  • Ethical considerations, social responsibility and sustainability are considered and appropriately addressed.
  • The design is functional and fit for purpose.
  • The technologies, materials selection, substrates and production methods (inks or otherwise) are sound and professionally executed.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:
  • A brief which identifies and analyses the complexity of the problem is developed.
  • Multiple design concepts developed and evaluated in response to the problem.
  • Precedent analyses are used effectively without compromising innovation and ingenuity.
  • Available design strategies, tools and methods are applied effectively to produce a refined and complete design solution for a multifaceted design problem.
  • The design process is documented including quality visual imagery and presentations.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:
  • Appropriate drawing format and media, including multimedia presentations are used to effectively showcase and communicate complex design solutions to different audiences.
  • Design solutions and debates are clearly and understandably verbally presented.
  • Accepted academic protocols for academic writing and referencing are observed and complied with.
  • A piece of academic writing is produced within the field of visual communication design that is clear, logical and readable.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:
  • Relevant strengths and weaknesses of different methodologies for different research approaches are evaluated.
  • Appropriate research methodologies to carry out simple but original research activities are employed.
  • The results of research are incorporated and referenced effectively into the design process.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5:
  • A variety of sources of information are accessed and evaluated.
  • A written argument that incorporates critical thinking and debate about a selected topic within design and visual communication is presented and wherein a particular position is successfully motivated.
  • References and examples are effectively integrated in a written argument to make it illustrative and persuasive.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 6:
  • A personal stance or philosophy within visual culture and design discourse is reached through a written research report.
  • An individual design philosophy within a design project is explored and expressed.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 7:
  • The content and area of speciality for practical and written projects within the field of Visual Communication design is determined in consultation with a supervisor.
  • Time and overall project development effectively managed for a long term project.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 8:
  • Accountability for design decisions taken is demonstrated, justifying or correcting choices made as appropriate.

    Integrated Assessment:
In accordance with the Institution's Assessment Policy, assessments integrate knowledge, skills, attitudes and applied competence. Assessments include both formative and summative assessment.

There are three major outputs which are assessed summatively in the postgraduate programme, namely the Minor Design project, Major Design Project and Critical Studies Research Paper, and students need to pass all of them to complete the programme. Formative and summative assessment: All three outputs are assessed summatively at the end of the year during the institution's final examination period. The practical work is submitted as well as verbally presented by the students. The written research paper is submitted. In addition, intermediary and formative assessments are conducted through the course of year as part of the learning process. Both internal and external moderation take place during the final examination period at the end of the year.

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY
The programme is comparable to the four-year Postgraduate qualifications in design, such as the Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) (Honours) offered at RMIT University in Australia, and the Honours year (4th year) of the Bachelor of Design offered at the University of New South Wales in Australia.
