PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for careers as Clinical Nephrologists, thus providing suitably skilled medical personnel who can contribute to the pool of academics and professionals with the competence and critical intellectual abilities to ensure advancement in the field of Nephrology and to make provision for the country's needs in a skilled scientific workforce of the highest calibre.

Graduates will acquire a high level of theoretical knowledge, practical skills and experience in the field of Clinical Nephrology, via appropriate assimilation and analysis of new information, the ability to find workable solutions to problems and challenges, and the practical application of accrued knowledge.

Learners are expected to acquire the necessary skills to identify key research opportunities, initiate well structured research studies, complete such studies, and apply the results thereof. Findings are expected to be presented in a report that meets the accepted criteria and ethical principles of the institution.

Successful completion of this Master of Philosophy in Nephrology (MPhil Neph) will also prepare those who aspire to move to a higher level of academic research work for Doctoral Studies and promote an approach based on academic integrity and professional ethics.

Rationale:
The global epidemic of chronic kidney disease has made appropriate training and research in this field a priority. South Africa has just over one Nephrologist per million people. Not only is more patient care required, but much more clinical research on the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, risk factors, prevention and appropriate management of renal disease has become mandatory. We need to generate our own data and cannot simply extrapolate from work done in the developed world.

This Master's Degree aims to address the need for properly trained clinicians with a thorough understanding of and experience in clinical research in the field of Nephrology. Similar to all the subspecialty programmes in Medicine, learners will be physicians who have obtained their Master of Medicine (MMed)/Fellowship of the College of Physicians of South Africa FCP (SA) or equivalent Degree.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Recognition of Prior Learning:
The Master of Philosophy in Nephrology conforms to the institution's Policy for the Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning which policy defines the process that must be followed in the assessment of an application for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) at postgraduate level. It provides information pertaining to assessment tools that can be used in the assessment of RPL and is subjected to the Faculty's quality assurance process.

Entry Requirements:
The entry-level qualification is a specialist Degree in Internal Medicine and registration with the relevant Professional Board of the HPCSA as a Specialist Physician. For admission to the Master of Philosophy in Nephrology, a learner must hold a MMed (Internal Medicine) or FCP (SA) or other equivalent qualification.
