PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Apply educational knowledge, skills, principles and methods as a Sport Scientist or Recreation/Tourism Manager/Developer or Movement Educational specialist or Advanced Exercise specialist, specialist in Biokinetics or specialist in Movement Education.

1. A scholar advancing the creative development of a special field in the Human Movement Science research community.
2. An original contributor to disciplinary expertise in a nationally and internationally recognised field of learning in Human Movement Science.
3. An independent authority and specialist in a field of learning.
4. A leader who's standing in civil society is based on advanced learning and literacy.

Qualifiers will demonstrate knowledge, skills and applied competence in the field of study that provide opportunities for continued personal growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society.

  • Advance research priorities; shaping and executing research designs; accessing the relevant databases and resources; interpreting individual cases; mastering appropriate technical research methodologies and report-writing procedures

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Learners will demonstrate their knowledge and skills through

    1. Successful execution and reporting of a supervised research project on a registered topic in a special field of learning.
    2. An independent scientific contribution (a doctoral thesis or five articles in accredited journals) assessed in accordance with requirements recognized in the national and international scholarly community.
    3. Dissemination of knowledge by participating in the organs of a field of learning (scholarly societies, events, projects, conferences, publications); and by participating in high-level debates and policy-making forums.
    4. Teaching and supervising postgraduate students in further and higher education institutions, providing professional guidance in a consultative capacity.

    Integrated assessment
  • Competence is achieved, through continuous assessment by demonstrating the ability to achieve the outcomes of the Qualification
  • Quality assurance, mentoring and moderation by means of co-supervisors and departmental research seminars.
  • Doctoral thesis or five articles submitted to and defended before an examination panel of experts in the special field of learning
  • The thesis or articles are accepted or rejected on the basis of the majority opinion of written examiners' reports
  • Assessment documents are moderated to ensure that:

    1. They conform to the scope and context of the competency as stipulated in the qualification
    2. They are constructed in such a way that the Assessor assesses the critical outcomes applied, during the Learners activity performances, towards achieving an outcome.
  • To include confirmation of the Embedded Knowledge component to ensure that the Foundational Competency is achieved 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Vertical: The Ph.D degree is the highest academic qualification
    Horizontal: Doctoral study on interdisciplinary research topics is possible between any of the disciplines in this field of learning 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • A system of external peer review and evaluation of departments including evaluation of the standards and assessment practices per Department.
  • Qualifications: The minimum academic and workplace experience requirements at a level above the level of moderation.
  • Appropriate professional criteria will be drafted in the case of workplace assessment
  • Mentorship: All junior and new members of staff are mentored by senior members as they work together in teams. All assessment done by external assessors is quality controlled by internal staff.
  • Any moderation criteria as determined by the ETQA.
  • Modules and assessment are internally moderated
  • Moderation panels consist of internal and external moderators, with external examiners always in the majority 

  • CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    The academic staff of the University of the Free State complies with standards set by Senate and will exercise their assessment within the approved quality assurance system of the University. Assessors will also meet all criteria as stipulated by the relevant ETQA.
