  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY
The qualification is comparable to the following international qualifications:

    Country: United Kingdom
Institution: University College of London (UCL)
    Qualification: MA Fine Art
    Similarities:
  • Both are Masters qualification in Fine Art with dissertation and practical work.

    Differences:
The MFA is a two-year programme (as should the MAFA in South Africa - as it is rarely completed within a one-year period). The MA Fine Arts at UCL has a taught History and Theory of Art component. Students are admitted into one of three subject areas: Painting, Sculpture or Fine Art Media. In the Wits MAFA, students are only engaged in a dissertation (25 000 words) and creative practice - they are able to choose their medium based on their concept and can work in interdisciplinary ways.

    Country: Australia
    Institution: University of Melbourne
Qualification: Master of Arts in Fine Arts
    Similarities:
  • Both programmes require students to produce a dissertation and body of practice.

    Differences:
The programme is two-years full-time. In the Wits MAFA, students are only engaged in a dissertation (25 000) words and creative practice. The University of Melbourne MAFA degree requires that students complete a minimum of 6 credit points from additional courses taken, 25,000 to 35,000 words (progress by thesis and coursework) or 10,000 to 12,000 words (progress by body of creative work for exhibition, thesis and coursework).
