The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To provide candidates with a sound knowledge of language use for application in various fields and also for pedagogical use in teaching and learning contexts. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
1. Candidates should know the general concepts and theories regarding language structure and language use as specialised knowledge of their particular areas.
2. Candidates should also be in command of the values required for research and be able to do individual, guided research and report such research in the form of the Extended Essay at the end of the course.

Candidates should demonstrate competence in theoretical and applied language studies for their professional practice. 

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
Integrated assessment

Assessors will normally be practising academics and must have, at least, a Master's degree in Linguisitcs or in Language studies. 

ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
Normally candidates will need to have passed all five registered courses to qualify for the Honours degree. 

MODERATION OPTIONS 
All papers that candidates will sit for will first be internally moderated, after which they will be moderated by a recommended external examiner. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
These will be practising academics with, at least, a Masters degree in Linguistics or Language studies. 

REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
