PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
Purpose:
The principal purposes of this qualification are to: > Life-long learning. > Critical citizenship. > A wide range of issues which are crucial to the welfare of society, for example upliftment, empowerment and transformation. This qualification is for persons who: Rationale: Architecture is acknowledged as an independent profession within the context of the built environment world-wide. Members of this profession enjoy due recognition and financial reward in terms of their specialised skills and competence, and are eligible for employment in numerous spheres of the economy which include private sector consultancies and professional firms, public sector employment (State, provincial and local authorities), tertiary/adult basic/further education and training, financial institutions, property development enterprises, research organisations and construction companies. While demand for architectural skills in various sectors is influenced by economic factors, for example, capital investment in property development projects, the skills and knowledge-base acquired by holders of this qualification afford opportunities for entry into many other fields, for example those involving interior or industrial design, landscape architecture, conservation/restoration/maintenance of the built environment, manufacturing or retailing. ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
Range: All work and assessments regarding a building relates to a building of a complexity as defined for Senior Architectural Technologists.
Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome Level 1: 1.1 Pre-project studies are conducted with particular regard to site information, and planning and statutory requirements. 1.2 Research material is interpreted to determine feasibility according to budgetary and legal constraints. 1.3 Aspects of architectural history and theory are incorporated into the design concept in terms of the standards associated with the project type. 1.4 Design principles are assessed for climatic, cultural and contextual validity as determined by the demands of the region. Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome Level 2: 2.1 Drawings and models are produced that reflect the envisaged appearance and configuration of the building. 2.2 Technical documents are produced as per project and statutory requirements. 2.3 A comprehensive set of contract documentation required for the erection of a building are produced. Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome Level 3: 3.1 Administer a building contract according to the relevant conventions and rules. 3.2 The project under construction is inspected to ensure compliance with the contract specifications. 3.3 Reports are compiled according to a format that suits the complexity of the project. 3.4 Drawings are produced that reflect changes to the contract specifications. Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome Level 4: 4.1 Basic organisational concepts and principles are integrated to promote sound architectural practice. 4.2 Basic business concepts are evaluated for applicability to specific management situations. 4.3 Business principles are applied according to best practice. 4.4 An information access and retrieval system is configured to meet current standards for security and simplicity. 4.5 The information system is integrated with the design and production programmes. Integrated Assessment: Learning and assessment are integrated throughout the qualification. Continuous formative assessment is applied to ensure that learners receive feedback on their progress towards the achievement of specific learning outcomes. Summative assessment concerned with the evaluation of the learning achievements relative to the Exit Level Outcomes of the qualification includes "overall integrated assessment" which evaluates the learner's ability to combine the various components and modules of the broader scope of knowledge, skills, competencies and attitudes represented by the qualification outcome as a whole or as individual component-processes of the overall learning experience leading to the qualification. Integrated Assessment is designed to accomplish/deliver: > Has been clearly explained to and is understood by the learners. > Can be applied in the Recognition of Prior Learning. In the assessment of whether the desired outcomes have been achieved (or not), recognition is given to criteria and evaluation methods that adequately and appropriately achieve such assessment. |
INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY |
International comparability of this first degree in architecture is ensured in Commonwealth Countries through agreements with the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Commonwealth Association of Architects, through the granting of Part 1 Exemption (also referred to as Part 1 Validation or Accreditation).
Standards are comparable with qualifications in Architecture in the above-mentioned countries having comparable architectural education systems to South Africa. Comparability is audited by mutual representation on visiting boards. Countries audited in Africa include Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. |
