PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The first purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifiers with a first degree-level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in a number of areas within Music that provide opportunities for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society.

The second purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa with significant numbers of experts in Music in order to ensure that the local leadership base of innovative and knowledge based economic and scholarly activity is widened.

The further aim of this qualification is the acquisition of specialist music skills and knowledge. The package can be compiled in such a way that, on its completion, students are qualified for a wide variety of music-related occupations, including the following: solo performer, orchestral or chamber musician, music teacher at all levels (for individual and group tuition), musicologist, music technologist, entrepreneur, and impresario.

The aim of the B A Mus package is to make students musically literate and to develop their practical music-making skills. They also learn to understand and appreciate many facets of the theory and history of music and are trained as capable classroom teachers. Apart from the music aspects of this package, students register for other BA subjects in which they acquire the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes of those disciplines.

The learning programme and planned learning outcomes are designed to promote lifelong learning.
