PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
Purpose:
  • The first purpose of the Rhodes Master of Business Administration qualification is to provide qualifiers with an integrated and effective mix of general-management knowledge and skills, that build on prior graduate-level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in a wide variety of disciplines in the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Commerce and Natural Sciences in such a way that a high degree of further growth in management skills and competence can readily take place.
  • The second purpose of the qualification is to equip learners who are in middle management positions in both public and private sector organisations, for senior management positions.
  • The third purpose of the qualification is to add to the knowledge and skills base of University graduates, thereby better equipping them for managerial positions in both the public and private sectors of the economy in which there is a dearth of management skills and competence.
  • The Rhodes Master of Business Administration Degree programme is based on the South African Excellence Model. The various modules of the course are taught in an integrated way with the emphasis placed on the organisational imperatives and functional areas of management which have to be addressed in order to achieve the desired results which include both quantitative dimensions (for example, financial) as well as qualitative dimensions (for example, quality).

    Rationale:
  • Since the decision by the University of Fort Hare to terminate their Master of Business Administration programme, the Port Elizabeth Technikon, soon to be merged with the University of Port Elizabeth, is the only provider of an Master of Business Administration programme in the Eastern Cape which is generally acknowledge to be either the poorest or second poorest province in South Africa. In the Eastern Cape, many people with good managerial potential are not able to afford either the time or the money to attend full-time Master of Business Administration programmes. Thus it is believed that the mixed-mode programme offered by Rhodes University provides a very real alternative for those students in particular. Not only do they have the convenience of being relatively close to Grahamstown from a geographical point of view, but they also do not have to give up their jobs. In addition, and very importantly, they are also not deprived of the excitement, stimulation and interaction of the business school classroom.
  • The Master of Business Administration as a course-work Masters programme, rather than as a Masters Degree by thesis, will increase the number of Postgraduate students at a Masters level in the Commerce Faculty at Rhodes University.
  • With Employment Equity and Black Economic Empowerment gaining momentum, there is a growing need throughout South Africa, and particularly in the Eastern Cape, to equip a growing number of people with Managerial and business knowledge, as well as with critical, analytical and decision-making skills.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The primary knowledge and skills which are assumed to be in place before the programme is commenced include the following:
  • Ability to think critically.
  • Ability to think analytically.
  • Ability to synthesise material from different sources.
  • Ability to engage in academic writing.
  • Ability to think and work independently.
  • Ability to do basic arithmetic, statistical and mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to debate and make presentations in English.
  • Ability to evaluate business theories in terms of practical experience.

    Recognition of Prior Learning:
  • Recognition of Prior Learning will be given to learners who attend an interview where they present and defend documented evidence which clearly demonstrates that they have achieved particular outcomes of the programme while working in a middle-management position.
  • Rhodes Investec Business School runs a three-week "Programme for Management Excellence" short course during July each year. The content and teaching methodology used on this short course is based on the Rhodes Investec Business School Master of Business Administration programme. Where applicants do not meet all the academic requirements normally required of a Master of Business Administration student, they are encouraged to enrol for this short course which then serves as a "screening" qualification. If applicants perform satisfactorily on this short course, they are then offered a place on the Master of Business Administration programme.

    Access to the Qualification:

Access to the Master of Business Administration normally requires the following:
  • A three year Degree or National Higher Diploma from a recognised Univeristy or Technikon.
  • Mathematics at a School-Leaving Level.
  • Fluency in English.
  • At least three years relevant business or organisational experience.

    Assessment entails three elements:
  • Formal end course assessment (summative). This normally takes the form of (a) a four-hour, open book examination with the emphasis on decision-making, and problem solving; and (b) a 6 000-word work-based assignment. The assessment is tied very closely to the learning outcomes specified at the beginning of the course.
  • Continuing formal assessment (formative and summative). This normally takes the form of short class tests, group presentations and class exercises.
  • Continuing informal assessment (formative). The nature of the programme is interactive. During the course of class discussions, case-study discussions and the application of the Socratic method of teaching, students can assess where they might be going wrong.

The following quality assurance procedures form part of the overall assessment systems:
  • Internal examiners and moderators.
  • External examiners and moderators.
  • Accreditation requirements and guidelines of the higher education quality assurance bodies (Higher Education Quality Committee of the Council of Higher Education, and SAQA requirements).
  • Requirements and guidelines of Rhodes University.

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY
As a result of the Visiting Professorship which the Director of the Rhodes Investec Business School (RIBS) holds at Durham Business School in the U.K, RIBS has close, informal links with the Durham Business School.

As a result, the Rhodes Investec Business School Master of Business Administration programme is continuously benchmarked against their programme in the following areas:
  • Administrative procedures - particularly with regard to contracts, requirements and communication with outside instructors.
  • Content courses.
  • Teaching methodologies.
  • Research practices and procedures relating to Master of Business Administration dissertations.
  • Assessment policies and procedures.

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS
  • A candidate in possession of Master of Business Administration credits from other universities and which are recognized by the Senate of Rhodes University as being equivalent, may be given exemptions for certain courses. In the short history of Rhodes Investec Business School, the only two cases of articulation have been with regard to some of the UNISA management courses, and the AIM programme at the Graduate School of Business at UCT. To reiterate, however, the policy at RIBS is to explore every situation on its merits and wherever possible, to grant credits for Master of Business Administration courses passed elsewhere.
  • Candidates who obtain a Master of Business Administration Degree have access to post graduate research programmes such as the Doctor of Philosophy.

  • MODERATION OPTIONS
All examination papers are externally moderated by appropriately qualified academics from other Higher Education Institutions. External examiners are required to moderate the exam papers according to the learning outcomes specified for the relevant course. In addition, external examiners assess a 50% sample of all examination scripts to ensure consistency of internal assessment and to ensure the maintenance of minimum standards.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS
The minimum academic qualification is a Master's degree but the majority will have a Doctor of Philosophy and be at the level of Senior Lecturer or above. All Rhodes members of staff who teach on the programme will be strongly encouraged to undergo assessor training conducted by the Rhodes Academic Development Centre.

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2009; 2012; 2015.

    NOTES
These qualifications will be realigned to what the CHE has termed Category C qualifications to comply with the HEQSF.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS QUALIFICATION:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
