PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

1. Public good

To strengthen the pool of appropriately qualified practising entrepreneurs, managers, decision makers, advisors, professionals and researchers in the economic life of South Africa in order to ensure that the local leadership base of innovative and value-adding economic and scholarly activity is widened.

2. Private good

2.1 To provide qualifiers with an integrated and effective mix of management skills that build on prior graduate-level knowledge and skills, attitude and competence in a variety of sciences as well as management experience in such a way that a high degree of further growth in management skills and professional competence can take place;

2.2 To provide qualifiers with the potential ability to develop the competence required for successfully engaging in managerial endeavours at the global level.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

A bachelors degree or equivalent qualification approved by the UPE Senate and substantial experience in practice.

Recognition of prior learning

Recognition of prior learning will also be given for outcomes achieved in other related degree / diploma programmes; or relevant professional experience. This is will be based on the learner's study record from an accredited provider or on a portfolio of evidence, an interview or an entrance examination. A research proposal for a treatise must be approved by the Executive Committee of the Faculty.

1. Economic and related problem solving

The qualifier is competent to identify, assess and formulate complex and contextual abstract problems relating to the economic principle of satisfying unlimited needs with limited means and apply appropriate knowledge and advanced skills for their solution.

2. Application of fundamental economic / management knowledge

The qualifier confidently demonstrates general management ability in the form of:

a. Mastery of economic and related theory and its application to the practice of management;
b. Challenging orthodox theory and suggesting new approaches;
c. Handling contradictions and making value commitments in respect of the management task;
d. Accepting accountability for guiding, achieving and evaluating individual or group output in the management context.

3. Capacity for independent study / dialogue

The qualifier is competent to:

a. Analyse and report on complex management cases;
b. Complete a treatise or project addressing a management problem;
c. Effectively interact and engage in debate with a management learning or professional group;
d. Demonstrate the honouring of ethical and professional values in the performance of the management task;
e. Demonstrate proficiency in the application of economic methods and information technology where applicable.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The assessment criteria will be based on the outcomes listed.

Integrated Assessment

A range of assessment strategies will be used to ensure that the above outcomes are integrated, e.g. workplace-based assignments, case studies in the form of individual and group projects, a treatise, written and oral examination.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

Qualifiers may proceed to the D.Com or equivalent degree (depending on approval by the UPE Senate).

MODERATION OPTIONS

External moderators (with professional affiliations where applicable) will be used for the treatise and examinations.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

Degrees (D.Com, DBA or equivalent) professional affiliations and relevant experience.

REREGISTRATION HISTORY

As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2009; 2012; 2015.
