PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

Providing post-graduate candidates with opportunities for and guidance and supervision in advanced, original, highly-specialised, scientific study, thereby making a contribution to the international body of knowledge in construction management and its related fields and demonstrating competence in documenting the research in accordance with pre-requisite, internationally-accepted standards of excellence.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

An MSc (Construction Management) degree;

or

A BSc Honours (Construction Management) or BSc Hons (Construction Management) degree with 7 years' appropriate post-graduate practical experience;

or

An equivalent qualification approved by the Senate of UPE.

or

A Masters' degree in a related discipline.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Research proposals for the thesis require approval by the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Economic Sciences prior to finalisation of a learner's registration procedures.

The study promoter/s, two or more examiners and moderators are appointed by the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Economic Sciences.

Continuous supervision and evaluation by the promoter/s of submissions leading to completion of a thesis and fulfilment of the requirements for the degree.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

As this is a doctoral research programme, it is unlikely that credits obtained at another tertiary institution will be appropriate as credits towards this degree inasmuch as early exit points are not possible.

Learners may apply to read for further PhD or DSc construction management degrees at any other institution of their choice which offers post-graduate studies in construction management and other appropriate or related fields.

Learners may be required to register for conversion courses (where competencies and credits differ amongst tertiary institutions).

MODERATION OPTIONS

Moderators are appointed and approved in terms of the pre-requisites stated by the University of Port Elizabeth Faculty of Economic Sciences.

Furthermore, those moderators are to hold appropriate post-graduate qualifications awarded by tertiary institutions other than UPE.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

Assessors are appointed and approved in terms of the pre-requisites stated by the University of Port Elizabeth Faculty of Economic Sciences.

Furthermore, those assessors are to hold appropriate post-graduate qualifications awarded by tertiary institutions other than UPE.
