The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To provide qualifiers with basic knowledge of specific disciplines comprising the field of Music Studies as well as practical competencies to enhance their artistic growth and the ability to teach music, pursue further intellectual development, engage in gainful economic activity in the Music industry, and contribute to the cultural and educational well-being of society. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
A grade 12 certificate as well as proven musical potential as determined by portfolio assessment or test conducted by the School of Music.

On completion of the programme learners will demonstrate the following competencies:

Foundational (F)

1. Basic knowledge of the principles and concepts underlying related disciplines in the field of Music Studies.

2. Understanding of the variety of contexts in which Music Studies and its education function.

3. Capacity to engage in self-directed and group-based learning via a basic understanding of the research process.

4. Basic knowledge of education and didactic principles as applies to Music.


Practical (P)

1. Able to communicate effectively in written, oral and artistic format.

2. Show basic proficiency in the use of information technology.

3. Access, process, and use existing information from a variety of sources.

4. Reach an intermediate level of music skills in the chosen field of study (e.g. performance, choral conducting).


Reflexive (R)

1. Demonstrate the ability to effectively integrate knowledge and skills in the field of Music Studies and its education.

2. Professional growth as a musician and teacher through the pursuit of effective study and research.

3. Understand the important role of Music in society.

4. Develop and maintain professional working relations with others in the teaching profession and the performing arts and culture.

5. Show a positive appraisal of cultural and musical diversity and the commitment to promote music and its appreciation.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
Integrated Assessment

A range of innovative assessment strategies will be utilised to ensure that the overall purpose and stated outcomes are achieved. These include oral and written examinations; assignments on both individual and group levels; practical music assessments; assessment of classroom and teaching strategies in simulated and real situations. 

ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
Vertical articulation: Articulates with the B Mus Ed degree.

Horizontal articulation: Possible on the basis of recognition of credits already obtained. 

MODERATION OPTIONS 
Music theory moderated by Unisa or Royal Schools. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
Assessors must be in possession of a Diploma or first degree in Music (or professional music qualifications deemed sufficient) plus teaching experience. 

REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2009; 2012; 2015.
