PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
Purpose:
The purpose of the qualification is to provide students with a more theoretical and practical insight into the field of chemistry. To equip a graduate learner with post graduate level skills that will be able to demonstrate a more in-depth knowledge of the main areas of chemistry that include organic, inorganic, physical and analytical. To equip the learner with skills in conducting research in the field of chemistry.

Rationale:
An honours qualification is important as it provides the first step for training of postgraduate students for the development of research capacity in South Africa.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
  • RPL will be done according to the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) RPL policy.

    Entry Requirements:
The minimum requirement for admission is:
  • A Bachelor of Science Degree.

  • RECOGNISE PREVIOUS LEARNING?

  • EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES
    1. Demonstrate the ability to recall important definitions and principles of the theory of chemistry.
    2. Apply knowledge of the principles of chemistry to application-based exercises.
    3. Demonstrate the ability to analyse and solve open ended problems by applying the correct methodologies and techniques to the problems.
    4. Make critical judgements and in-depth interpretations of chemical evaluations.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
The competencies or skills acquired by the student will include:
  • Reasoning skills to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and to reflect critically on theory.
  • Reasoning, technical and creative skills to investigate, analyze and synthesize complex information, problems, concepts and theories and to apply established theories to different bodies of knowledge.
  • Communication and technical research skills to justify and interpret analysis, results and conclusions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Communication and technical skills to theorize about developments that contributes to scholarship.
  • Demonstrate ability to plan, conduct and report on research in the field of Chemistry.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and ability in the practical techniques and laboratory skills needed for performing research in the field of Chemistry.

    Integrated Assessment:
Integrated Assessment takes place mainly in the research project where the theory and analytical knowledge are applied.

The programme includes both formative and summative assessments for the theory modules. Formative assessments are provided by means of tutorials and assignments. These are used to provide formal feedback on performance to candidates. Tests form both formative and summative assessments for theory modules. Test marks are included as part of the class mark. Summative assessment concludes with formal written examinations which are assessed internally by the lecturers, and externally moderated by discipline experts at other South African universities.

This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
