The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:

With this qualification, successful learners may be employed as junior managers in public, private and non-governmental organisations. Learners will also be empowered with the learning and skills necessary to initiate and develop their own businesses.

Learners successfully mastering the competencies in this qualification will be able to contribute to the broader society by providing sound business administration managerial skills within both the public and private sectors. This qualification offers Christian-orientated learning around professionalism, ethics and accountability.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Applying a broad understanding of business, management and accounting in order to demonstrate, identify, evaluate and solve fundamental business and management problems.
  • Applying specialised skills in various functional aspects of business management such as marketing, finance, human resources, legal matters and statistics.
  • Applying specialised knowledge in the overall business environment as it pertains to management.

    Rationale:

    This qualification meets the needs of the business sector by providing learners with specialised business administration managerial skills who will be able to contribute to the development of the country and the economy, in both the private and public sectors, through critical and analytical thinking and innovation. Learners will be capacitated to make business administration-related decisions through expertise acquired during learning. The qualification also fulfils an on-going need in the development of the economy as the competent management of businesses, both formal and entrepreneurial, remains a critical need.

    The typical learners attempting this qualification would migrate from the schooling system with the necessary admission requirements. This qualification enables graduates to pursue an Honours Degree in areas such as Business Administration, Business Leadership, Human Resource Management, Public Administration.

    This qualification achieves the objectives of the NQF by facilitating access to, and mobility and progression within education, thereby contributing to the full personal development of each learner and the social and economic development of the nation at large. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:
  • Communication in the language of learning and teaching of the provider at NQF Level 4.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.

    Recognition of Prior Learning:

    This qualification may be achieved in part through the Recognition of Prior Learning, which includes formal, informal and non-formal learning and work experience. Care is taken that the Recognition of Prior Learning mechanism provides the learner with an opportunity to demonstrate competence and is not so onerous as to prevent learners from taking up the Recognition of Prior Learning option. Recognition of Prior Learning is done by means of Integrated Assessment.

    Recognition of Prior Learning may also be used to gain access to the qualification by those learners who do not meet the minimum admission requirements.

    Access to the Qualification:

    Access to this qualification is open for learners who have:
  • Successfully completed the National Senior Certificate with the relevant admission requirements for Bachelor Degree study.
    OR.
  • Successfully completed the National Certificate: Vocational, NQF Level 4 with the relevant admission requirements for Bachelor Degree study.

    To be awarded the qualification, learners are required to obtain a minimum of 404 credits.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

    3.1 Synthesise information and communicate information reliably and coherently using standard academic formats.
    3.2 Demonstrate the ability to apply management knowledge to practical business situations and evaluate various alternatives.
    3.3 Understand the central methods of enquiry and research and independently carry out a research project regarding a business problem.
    3.4 Demonstrate the ability to appreciate the multicultural and socio-economic aspects of the environments in which the international firms operate.
    3.5 Apply the specialised management theories and knowledge in group projects, diagnose problems that organisations face and present effective solutions.
    3.6 Demonstrate and apply strategic thinking techniques to the current position of an organisation, its long term direction, resources, competitive capabilities, its present strategy and opportunities for gaining sustainable competitive advantage.
    3.7 Integrate the knowledge of various functional aspects of management and the management process in organisational design and change.

    Integrated Assessment:

    The assessment strategy of this qualification takes into account a variety of assessment methods such as: problem-solving assignments, case studies, portfolios of learning materials, projects, class tests, written examinations and internship.

    The final integrated assessment takes into account the following characteristics:
  • The extent to which the learner will be able to operate efficiently within a professional environment.
  • The extent to which the learner has integrated the roles, knowledge, values and the skills delivered through the different courses that make up the qualification.
  • It is designed in such a way that the various components (diagnostic, formative and summative) are assessed at various stages of the delivery of module.
  • The ability to perform important practical functions competently such as preparing a marketing plan, business plan, strategic plan, interpret financial statements, carry out a business research, understand the theoretical basis for these actions and reflect on and make changes to teaching and learning practices. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    This qualification compares favourably with a three-year Bachelor of Business Administration Degree offered by the European University. This qualification differs in that it offers Christian-orientated learning. The Degree has also been compared with that of the Southern Adventist University operating under the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Accrediting Association, United States of America (USA) and Andrews University, operating under the North Central Association Accrediting body, USA.

    It compares favourably with those qualifications in terms of content. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Horizontal Articulation:
  • This qualification articulates horizontally with any relevant cognate qualification at NQF Level 7.

    Vertical Articulation:
  • This qualification articulates vertically with any relevant cognate Honours Degree or Postgraduate Diploma at NQF Level 8. 

  • MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Internal and external moderation is conducted by moderators appointed by the provider.
  • Both internal and external moderators are in possession of an appropriate qualification, as well as relevant and current expertise.
