PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
  • To develop nursing researchers that can do independent research and make an original contribution to the science of nursing.
  • The dissertation will be in line with the research focus of the university and the health needs of the South African society.

    1. Specific Exit-level Outcomes

    The graduate will on completion of the qualification be able to:

    1.1 Deliver proof of the expertise to conduct independent research.
    1.2 Make an original contribution to the knowledge content and development of nursing as a science and profession.
    1.3 Demonstrate insight in the science philosophy and paradigms in nursing and the ability to develop nursing theory.
    1.4 Communicate research in publications and conferences nationally and internationally.
    1.5 Disseminate research findings to the academic and broader community to improve nursing practice and health service.

    2. Critical Cross-field Outcomes

    Because the critical cross-field outcomes prescribed by SAQA are integral to the process of nursing education, they are potentially embedded in all the specific outcomes. In the above outcomes the emphases are as follows:

    On completion of the programme competencies of learners will include:

    2.2 Working effectively as a member of a team or research community: this outcome is embedded in specific outcome 1.4 - 1.5.

    2.4 Information processing: this outcome is embedded in specific outcomes 1.1 - 1.5.
    2.5 Communicating effectively: this outcome is embedded in all the specific outcomes of the programme in order to function as an independent researcher (Link with 1.4 - 1.5 of specific outcomes).
    2.6 Effective and critical use of science and technology: this outcome is embedded in all the specific outcomes of the programme in order to function as an independent practitioner (Link with 1.1 - 1.5 of specific outcomes).
    2.7 Demonstrating a systemic understanding of the world: this outcome is embedded in all the specific outcomes of the programme in order to function as an independent researcher.
    2.8 Reflecting on and exploring learning strategies: this outcome is embedded in specific outcomes 1.1, 1.2 and 1.5.

    2.12 Developing entrepreneurial opportunities: this outcome is embedded in all the specific outcomes of the programme because the learner is prepared to function as an independent nurse researcher. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The criteria for assessing learners are based on the learning outcomes listed above and the strategies that will be used to ensure that the specific and critical cross-field outcomes are achieved comprise of:
  • At least three examiners of whom two are external examiners from outside the university to evaluate the thesis.
  • An oral examination on the research for the degree may be required. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification is recognised by other universities nationally and will provide the bearer of this degree with opportunities to undertake Post-doctoral research. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The thesis is evaluated externally by accredited assessors with an equivalent qualifications at another university. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    The criteria for assessing learners are based on the learning outcomes listed above and the strategies that will be used to ensure that the specific and critical cross-field outcomes are achieved comprise of:
  • At least three examiners of whom two are external examiners from outside the university to evaluate the thesis.
