PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

Purpose:

To be able to conduct independent research in a specialised field of clothing or fashion and contribute to knowledge production in the chosen area. The research problem, its justification process and outcome is reported in a dissertation which complies with generally accepted norms at this level.

1. The listed and cited literature of the literature survey and the exposition of the research reflect familiarity with relevant and recent trends in technologies, techniques, models and theories in the chosen field. Models, principles, theories, techniques and methodologies in the chosen field are analysed, explained, and juxtaposed correctly in oral presentations and the written record of research.

2. The use of literature surveys/experimentation/correlation/causal analysis is justified fully and correctly in oral presentation and the written record of research. The research problem is clearly identified, defined and detailed in the research proposal. The stated hypothesis directs the investigation. Logical interpretation of data reflects clear understanding of the relationship between facts in the study and the ability to evaluate contradictory information. Information sources are used correctly and appropriately and include a range of media. Information technology skills are applied effectively in information searches, data-analysis, data presentation, and the production of the dissertation. The appropriate mathematical and statistical methods are applied correctly to quantitative and qualitative data. The inferences, interpretations and conclusions from measurements and statistical analysis are valid. Language and numeracy skills are applied effectively and correctly in communicating the research problem, its investigation, outcome and recommendations, clearly.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Integrated Assessment:

The explicitness, validity and reliability of assessment practices are ensured via several methods; the appointment of internal and external moderators and supervisors in the specialised fields. Additionally, the appointment of the internal and external moderators and supervisors are ratified by Vaal University of Technology senate. At the Vaal University itself, all records are captured on an internal ITS system that ensures explicitness, validity and reliability of assessment practices. Should disputes arise they are settled immediately internally between the assessment centre and the student and recorded and amended for future assessment practices.

INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY

Many efforts have been affected to ensure that the MTECH Fashion is on par with other degrees offered at the same level within the same field.

As with MA Fashion offered by Kingston University in London, the VUT MTech qualification is an innovative Post graduate course during which students participate in interdisciplinary modules and projects. Students are challenged to expand their design thinking and methodology, to experiment and transform their medium and to work in dynamic teams to exchange and create ideas.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

This programme focuses on research and expertise in the field of Fashion as set out in the rationale for this programme and fills the gap between the Bachelor of Technology: Fashion and a Doctorate or a Doctor of Philosophy: Fashion.

MODERATION OPTIONS

Recommendation of a moderating body or bodies (internal and external):

The supervisor must sign a declaration that the thesis is ready for examination. Attached to this declaration by the supervisor, must be a completed mark sheet with a proposed/expected mark plus additional comments on the thesis, just as an examiner would.

Assessment of full and partial Master of Technology dissertations shall be done by two examiners of which at least one must be external. The supervisor cannot be an Examiner.

All internal and external supervisors and moderators, in accordance with the institutional employment policy of the Vaal University of Technology, staff offering this programme will have a qualification of at least one level on the NQF higher than that of the programme concerned.

The policies and procedures for internal assessment; internal and external moderation are appropriate to the mode of delivery of the programme since at the Vaal University of Technology, the internal assessment of student learning achievements is conducted by the academic staff responsible for teaching the course/module of the programme.

Furthermore, internal and external supervisors and moderators for the programme are specialists in their field and as such are qualified to supervise and moderate the relevant aspects of the programme.

Assessors must ensure that marks for assessments are awarded according to the marking guidelines/memorandum. Assessors shall complete and sign the required report on assessment results which shall be handed in at the assessment office. Procedure for settling of disputes and security of the assessment system will be as stated in the Institution's assessment regulations.
