PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

The qualifiers will be able to:

Translate basic forms, shapes and simple objects into a rudimentary language of drawing consisting of the basic elements of art;

Use various graphics media; draw from life using various techniques and devices;

Use the basic elements of design using a variety of drawing media which include;

Do basic studies of the standing and seated human figure;

Understand the basic interdependence between shape, volume and value;

Employ basic sensory, intuitive, intellectual and emotional responses in creating a graphic image;

Show fluency in the manipulation and control of both the elements of art and the media;

Understand the basic formal elements of art;

Create two-dimensional compositions using the different elements of art;

Use a variety of monochromatic art-making techniques and materials;

Construct a basic composition using knowledge of all the formal elements of art;

Use introductory pattern making and print making techniques;

Use a variety of polychromatic art making techniques and materials;

Make a calligraphy and to understand its position within the monochromatic relief-printing processes;

Use a basic compositional design to transpose from a graphic to a printmaking medium and an intaglio printmaking technique;

Make a graffito as an introduction to the intaglio process;

Produce a zinc plate etching in monochrome;

Use figure in graphics, sculpture and painting;

Do visual research into more complex formal and technical problems in graphics, sculpture or painting;

Identify works from specific periods and civilizations: classical civilization, Greek and Roman art, Byzantine and early Christian eras, Gothic art;

Understand the relationships between national character and artistic output;

Have a basic understanding of the relationship between religious system and artistic production and style;

Discus works and structures typifying the social and political conditions of that time;

Make the relationship between religious fervour and the stylistic qualities of medieval architecture and illuminated manuscripts;

Describe, discuss and analyse Renaissance art, Baroque art, and 1 8'h Century art, primitive and Southern African art, African art.

1. Ability to use various drawing graphic media, to think creatively, and to apply drawing as a communication vehicle and a means of decoding events and situations.
2. Ability to understand, appreciate and evaluate painting as a form of visual expression, and render images using various techniques and media.
3. A comprehension of the value of art and the functions it fulfills in different cultural contexts.

Specific Outcomes:

1.1 Participate in base critical analysis of art works.
1.2 Understand the process of drawing as an expressive process.
1.3 Apply knowledge of visual language acquired in practical work in theoretical components and non-art areas.

2.1 Identify and understand tbe medium, the concepts and the processes of painting as a from of visual expression.
2.2 An in depth understanding of the value of painting beyond the obvious visual images.
2.3 Produce and organise professional presentations.

3.1 Critically analyse and synthesise the relationship between a religious system and artistic production and style.
3.2 Understand the relationship between national character and artistic output as a reflection of national identity and apply to the analysis of particular works.
3.3 Develop a motivated, knowledge based and value based sense of judgment of art works.

Integrated assessment:

Continuous assessment of content, skills and attitudes for each module by means of oral presentations and written project assignments.

Formative and summative assessment are integrated by means of an exit level module consisting of a project where learners will demonstrate their applied competence in the exit level outcome;

An integrated field assessment and mentoring for all specific outcomes.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

Learners may move vertically to Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Master of Fine Arts.

Learners may move horizontally to Bachelor of Education.

MODERATION OPTIONS

All assessment will be moderated by internal second assessors. The programme and qualification will be reviewed periodically by a panel of external assessors approved by the University Senate. This review will include teaching and learning methodologies, assessment practice; and programme and qualification fitness for purpose.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

University of North-West staff will be utilised as assessors in accordance with the quality assurance and promotion system of the University.
