| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| The purpose of the qualification is to provide an exit level for learners at NQF level 8 prior to completion of the M Ed research report, as the PGDE constitutes the successful completion of the course work component of the M Ed (CW) qualification.
The course work programmes leading to the PGDE aim to build specialized knowledge, professional competence and research skills in the following specialised areas of education: This qualification will enable educators to assume professional leadership positions in the respective fields of expertise. Holders of the PGDE qualification may proceed with the research project (mini-dissertation) into pertinent problems of educational nature and related to their chosen field of expertise, leading to the M Ed (CW) qualification. |
| LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
| NQF Level 7 (600 credits)
Bachelor of Education (HONS); or A B (HONS) degree relevant to education and an approved teaching qualification; or An Advanced Diploma in Education (NQF Level 7,120 credits); or RPL equivalent. Evidence of applied competence must be assessed through at least a written report which should include a portfolio to prove educational experience at the required level ad oral defence of such a report. |

| Educators at this level will:
1. Demonstrate professional competence and in-depth, advanced reflexive understanding of the knowledge, skills, values, principles, methods and procedures of those aspects of education relevant to the area of specialisation to a standard relevant to NQF level 8; 2. Identify, analyse and solve problems relevant to the area of specialization, and will demonstrate research skills to the point of writing research articles, essays and reports. 3. Play a professional leadership role in a whole range of educational activities linked to the area of specialisation Educators at this level will: 1. Identify and solve problems that require critical and creative thinking, and the ability to collect, organise, analyse and critically evaluate information. 2. Recognise the integrated nature of problem solving contexts 3. Contribute to the personal and social development of learners 4. Be able to work as a member of a team 5. Demonstrate time-management and organisation skills 6. Demonstrate effective communication in a variety of modes, e.g. oral, written, non-verbal, etc. 7. Use science and technology effectively, showing responsibility to the environment and health of others. |

| Educators at this level will:
1. Apply discrete skills and knowledge within units of learning relevant to the specialisation; 2. Carry out investigations; 3. Write advanced research essays, reports and articles; 4. Suggest intervention strategies in authentic (value-laden) Educational contexts based on research findings; 5. Demonstrate the ability to adapt practice to meet changing circumstances. INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT Evidence will be primarily (through not exclusively) of a written kind and will include demonstration of academic debate and argument, written research reports and articles and defence of research findings (which may include oral defence). Written examinations remain an option. Competence will also be demonstrated through projects, portfolios, seminar presentations and simulations |

| Vertical:
Vertically, the PGDE qualification will lead the student into the M Ed (Course Work). Horizontal: Horizontally credits may be transferred subject to the academic requirements of other faculties and qualifications. External: Externally, the programmes leading to the qualification have distinct articulation possibilities with similar programmes and modules offered at other universities and technikons. There are also distinct possibilities of articulation and mobility in the workplace as indicated by the National Department of Education in its occupational requirements in the sub-fields of NSB Field 05. |
