| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| Purpose:
A graduate candidate at this level will be able to run a large, complex sport organisation and to operate nationally and internationally in the sport industry. Rationale: Numerous factors are continuing to place ever increasing demands on the sport industry for highly skilled and specifically qualified manpower. Some of these include increased professionalism in sport, the re-admission of SA to the international sport arena, increased government spending for sport and the numerous international events being hosted by South Africa. After a thorough review and deliberations with the Advisory Committee of representatives from the field, it was unanimously agreed that there was a need for training in the Sport Management field. With its fast development, it has become important for trained persons to be able to undertake research where necessary. The three year Diploma: Sport Management and fourth year Degree: Sport Management will provide for this need. An increasing need for individuals with this qualification has been expressed by the sport industry throughout the country. The Baccalareus of Sport Management is currently been offered by, inter alia, the Technikon Pretoria, Witwatersand, Bloemfontein, Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Port Elizabeth. The Vaal University of Technology was requested by the students and representatives of the Advisory Committee of the possibility of offering the Bachelor of Technology: Sport Management in the Vaal Triangle. |
