PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of the qualification is to provide students with the opportunity to:
1. attain in-depth knowledge on research and to develop the ability to plan a research project answering to all the requirements of scientific research.
2. Attain comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of selected theoretical areas in Communication Pathology and develop the ability to creatively integrate knowledge, critically evaluate the literature and to formulate an own opinion.
3. Attain comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of selected areas of intervention in Communication Pathology and develop the ability to independently diagnose and treat complex cases (if practical modules are chosen).
4. Develop the ability of scientific reporting
5. Pursue a career of life-long learning
The overall propose of the qualification is to provide South Africa with Speech-Language Therapists and/or Audiologists who are masters in their field and who can serve the community suffering from communication pathology by rendering expert services and who are able to do scientific research in the field.

A graduate of this programme is able to:
  • Plan scientific research.
  • Present the research methodology as an essay or the methodology and research outcomes in a scientific format as either an article or dissertation.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of selected areas from the field of Communication Pathology and be able to creatively integrate and critically evaluate this knowledge and formulate own opinions and present this as a scientific essay.
  • Diagnose and independently undertake intervention of complex cases with communication pathology in case of the selection of practical modules.
  • Choose on theoretical grounds and undertake perceptual and instrumental analyses in case of the selection of this module.

    To meet the requirements for the qualification the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes of the learner are assessed on the basis of any or all of the following:
  • Performance during oral presentations in front of peers and/or experts.
  • Written outputs in the format of essays and reports.
  • Where applicable, written examinations reflecting research competence.
  • A Master's dissertation, being the culmination of research efforts.
    The assessment will be primarily criteria-based and reliability will be ensured by both internal and external moderation.

    The modalities for integrate assessment permit the candidate to demonstrate applied competence. Mainly formative methods set according to specific guidelines and methods related to credentialing the critical exit-level and cross-field outcomes appropriate to contextual and situational achievements are recognised.
    In addition to the above, modalities such as group discussions and presentations in front of peers and experts may also be used.
    Final assessment by expert external assessors, both academic and non-academic, will be done of the dissertation.

    Career experience required:
  • Lecturers who act as supervisors and internal examiners must hold a master's degree or doctorate in Communication Pathology.
  • External examiners must hold a master's degree of doctorate in Communication Pathology and must have experience of teaching at a tertiary institution.
  • Written reports on essays, articles, dissertations and practical work have to be compiled by both internal and external examiners.
