PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
  • Candidates achieving this qualification will have a deeper appreciation of aspects of physiological aspects of the cultivation of food plants with special reference to Rubus, Vaccinium or Solanum cultivated under South African conditions. This will be attained primarily through advanced scientific research and through discourse with the national and international scientific community through conferences and peer-reviewed publications
  • Candidates achieving this degree will be competent in research planning and proposal writing, research procedure and ethics, and the analysis, interpretation and presentation of research findings both orally and in the form of a written thesis
  • Candidates achieving this qualification will be competent in the application of biochemical techniques and aspects of computer technology as research tools
  • Candidates achieving this qualification will be competent for employment in the following positions where learning can continue through relevant in-service training: College, technikon and university lecturer up to senior academic rank, researchers, research directors, agricultural mangers, museum curators and nature conservators

  • Six-monthly progress reports by candidates and supervisors are submitted to the Dean of Post-graduate Studies and relevant post-graduate committees to ensure satisfactory progress
  • An internal examiner of the thesis is appointed from within the School of Life Sciences depending on the nature of the research project and the availability of expertise

    External moderation
  • At least one external co-supervisor is appointed
  • A scientist who is a world leader in the area in which the research is conducted is appointed as external examiner of the thesis.
