These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The qualification aims at providing learners with the necessary inter-disciplinary knowledge and practical competence to manage sport and recreation activities for the broader community, as well as top-level sports persons. The courses are structured to ensure that learners develop a comprehensive understanding of the management discipline by completing modules within Economic and Management Sciences, but that they also understand the context within which their knowledge has to be applied through the exploration of relevant human movement studies subject matter.

The comprehensive, interdisciplinary nature of this Honours qualification distinguishes it from similar courses offered at other tertiary institutions in South Africa. A notable feature of the university qualification is that it recognises that certain aspects of recreation are not accommodated in sport and that the management of both sport and recreation therefore receive equal emphasis. Moreover, the qualifications are designed to address the role and functions of managers at grassroots and elite-level sport, and also with regard to physical and non-physical forms of recreation. An additional rationale for introducing the Sport and Recreation Management qualification at the university is that no other tertiary institution is currently offering opportunities for training and development in this domain.
