PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This programme is designed to present students who wish to pursue research in Human Movement Studies with the necessary in-depth knowledge and research skills. The multi-disciplinary nature of the curriculum allows students to engage with research developments in the various sub-disciplines with a view to identifying an appropriate research topic. Although students could terminate their studies upon completion of this degree, the programme is designed to prepare students for independent research at a masters level. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Candidates in possession of the B.A. or B.Sc (H.M.S.) degree, or the HDE (IGCE) in Human Movement Studies, may enrol for this programme. In addition, candidates who do not have undergraduate qualifications in Human Movement Studies, but are in possession of a NQF level 6 qualification such as a four year college diploma, may also enrol for the programme, provided that they have specialised in physical education or a related field up to their final year, and have a minimum of 10 years professional or practical experience in this field.

Graduates should be able to demonstrate the ability to:

= interpret, analyse and contextualise research findings in the sub-disciplines of Human Movement Studies;

= understand and apply the theoretical foundations of the various sub-disciplines of Human Movement Studies;

= understand and apply the methodological frameworks that are most appropriate to doing research in the various sub-disciplines of Human Movement Studies;

= develop and present a research proposal independently;

= employ critical thinking skills during debates regarding Human Movement Studies subject matter;

= read and examine professional and academic texts with insight. 

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved:

A variety of assessment procedures will be used. These can include the following:
  • Formal end of course assessment (summative);
  • Continuing formal assessment (formative and summative);
  • Continuing informal assessment (formative).

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Students who have completed 120 credit points may continue with an M.A in one of the major areas of specialisation. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Modules at this level will be moderated through an external examiner appointed by Senate. The moderating body for this qualification is the Council for Higher Education. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    An assessor will have at least an Honours or Masters degree in the appropriate subject plus a minimum of three to five years experience in teaching the course.
