Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The qualification produces learners who will emerge with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the principle concepts of the field of Biochemistry. Also, equip these learners with good communication (written and oral), time management and technical skills as required in a wide variety of work places as indicated by extensive market research. To produce post-learners with the required insight and research skills commensurate with Honours Exit Level so that they can undertake higher-level research to meet South Africa's needs in Science, Education and Technology (SET).

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Entry Requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry NQF Level 7.

  • RECOGNISE PREVIOUS LEARNING?

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES
    1. Demonstrate deeper understanding and thinking on topical areas of Biochemistry.
    2. Critically evaluate scientific publications and identify areas that need further research and use appropriate methodology to accomplish this (Ref. SAQA CO4).
    3. Work independently and within a team to solve problems or complete tasks within negotiated time-frames (Ref. SAQA CO 2 and 3).
    4. Demonstrate technical competence in the laboratory (Ref. SAQA CO 1 and 6).
    5. Demonstrate advanced communication (written and oral) skills and the use of computer technology to present, store and analyse data and information (Ref. SAQA CO 5).

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
The following associated assessment criteria apply across all Exit Level Outcomes:
  • Concepts and theories of more advanced areas in Biochemistry - additional information and insights gleaned from the latest literature and group discussions.
  • Read sufficiently profoundly and critically into an assigned topic to present in written and oral form the background information and critique of the research approach used by the authors.
  • Execute a research project of 6 months duration competently and communicate the data gathered and interpreted appropriately.
  • Research ethics.

    Integrated Assessment:
Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved:

The institution is currently reforming its assessment strategies to include the assessment of applied competence for each qualification. In the meantime, a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations serve to assess the integration of all/most of the learning outcomes for each module in a qualification.

Research project of 6 months' duration provides capstone assessment in that it comprises research proposal, literature search, laboratory work, processing and evaluation of data and communication of findings. The project topic is based on the learner's backgrounds and interests and draws together the knowledge and understanding of the field of Biochemistry and how that can be applied to problem-solving. The remainder of the assessment comprises written seminars and their oral presentation and written examinations.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS QUALIFICATION:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
