The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
German is an academic and vocational discipline which equips learners with a competence in the German language and civilisation. Learners are also provided with the skills to understand the target language and culture within the wider context of the South African multilingual and multicultural context. In its own right the German qualification provides learners with a valuable and directly relevant qualification for careers in the South African diplomatic service, in international trade and commerce and in government organs that deal with the same, in tourism, in publishing (translation) - in short for any career that involves contact with German-speakers or German text. Within the South African context, it provides the vital experience of a western culture that is of economic importance to South Africa and generally enables learners in terms of the SAQA critical outcomes at a level appropriate to the qualification. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Entry Requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Bachelor of Arts, NQF Level 7.

  • If the Translation option is taken, understand the mechanics involved in the translation process (methodology and application) as well as the practical use of translation in a professional environment;
  • Work both individually and as a member of a group;
  • Make use of the Internet in conducting research;
  • Market the skills and competencies acquired in the qualification in both the private and public sector (e.g. diplomatic service etc.);
  • Demonstrate a level of competencies in the relevant language(s) more advanced than that of the completed major in the BA General Studies;
  • Analyse a wide variety of texts;
  • Situate a text appropriately within a cultural and historical continuum;
  • Work professionally at an advanced level with languages in the field such as diplomacy, tourism.

  • Demonstrate detailed knowledge of specific areas of inquiry in the qualification;
  • Understand the interrelationships amongst various areas of the field of knowledge;

  • Grasp the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of the area of study;
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of current critical debates;
  • Summarise, compare and evaluate a substantial body of knowledge;
  • Construct a sustained argument, formulate questions and work towards solutions;
  • Command the conceptual discourse of the field of study;
  • Solve both theoretical and applied problems;
  • Demonstrate an appropriate understanding of the discipline;
  • Contextualise this study within the social environment and the historical understanding;
  • Develop a clear understanding of the historical and present state and possible future of the relevant disciplinary areas;
  • Demonstrate command of academic English at an appropriate level.

    Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved:

    A combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations serve to assess the integration of all/most of the learning outcomes for each module in a qualification.

    This qualification compares with the following international qualifications in terms of the range of competencies in the learning content offered. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification offers both possibilities of horizontal and vertical articulation.

    Horizontal Articulation:

  • Bachelor of Arts Honours: German in Literature and Literary Theory, NQF Level 8.

    Vertical Articulation:
  • Master of Arts in German, NQF Level 9.
