PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

Purpose:

Graduates of this qualification must be able to deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively, make sound judgments using data and information at their disposal, and communicate their conclusions clearly to specialists and non-specialists audiences; demonstrates self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems; act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional level and continue to advance their knowledge, understanding and skills.

Rationale:

To educate and train researchers who can contribute to the development of knowledge at an advanced level. Also prepare graduates for advanced and specialized professional employment.

QUALIFICATION RULES

NQF Level 9 with 180 credits. This qualification is earned by completing a single advanced Research Project, culminating in the production of a dissertation. Minimum credits at NQF Level 9 is 120 credits.

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES

Produces an acceptable dissertation; in addition himself/herself for an oral examination as determined by Senate on the recommendation of the Board of Faculty.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Assessment commences with the approval of the research topic by the departmental research committee; presentation of the research proposal to the departmental research committee as well Faculty Postgraduate Research Committee; approval of proposal by the Faculty Postgraduate Research and Ethics committee; presentation of research project to the Faculty Postgraduate Research Committee followed by submission of a completed research project on the recommendation of the supervisor.

INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY

This qualification follows internationally recognized standards of a Masters Degree. Graduates will be accepted for doctoral studies following this qualification locally and internationally.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

The graduates can proceed to doctoral degree studies.

MODERATION OPTIONS

Each candidate has internal examiner who is the supervisor, one internal moderator and two external examiners all of whom should hold a doctoral degree.

The assessors' curriculum vitae are scrutinized and approved by the board of faculty who recommend appointment of such assessors to the university Senate.

Moderators and external assessors follow university stipulated guidelines on assessment of dissertations that emphasize proof of candidate's acquaintance with the methods and techniques of research.
