PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

* To strengthen research skills, managerial skills and educational skills acquired at Bachelors degree level.

* To develop specialisation in the area of interest so as to improve the quality of care through proper planning and input to policy formulation.

* To conduct research for the improvement of nursing and health services and to utilize research for the provision of quality are.

* To increase the understanding of dynamics in health care and health service.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

* A Bachelors degree in the field of nursing or equivalent

* Proof of registration with the South African Nursing Council and proof of membership with any South African Nursing Association/Professional Organisation.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

The candidate must have obtained 60% in the area of specialization or have passed an additional entry exam designed for candidates who obtained less than 60% in the area of specialization at Bachelors degree level. Students who have conducted a research project may be credited.

Health planning, utilization of research, research skills, managerial skills, contribution to policy formulation, contribution towards the development of the area nursing speciality.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Class presentations, assignments, project proposals, tests, contribute towards a year mark. First year courses - one-hour paper in each course, computer skills will be examined separately and obtain a certificate.
Each speciality has three 3-hour papers.

MODERATION OPTIONS

All papers and the thesis are sent to external examiners

All assessors are nurse educators who have the nursing specialities required in this programme.
