PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of the qualification is to bridge undergraduate (general, postgraduate knowledge) and skills training for the benefit of learners and the society. It is intended to provide in-depth theoretical knowledge and lifelong learning. This programme will prepare learner for the Masters programme.

Rationale:
The qualification seeks to provide students with an opportunity for in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical skills in their field of specialisation. The programme serves as a response to local, provincial, national and international needs. It also provides the society with intellectual and independent leaders. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The entrance requirement for the Honours programme is a Bachelors Degree (360 credits) or equivalent. Applicants are selected on the basis of academic performance, relevant experience and specific needs of the community. In some instances candidates are interviewed to clarify details concerning their applicants.

  • Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical and/or language skills in the modes of oral and/or written presentation.

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Demonstrate an ability to understand the development of knowledge, concepts and principles applicable to a specialised field of social sciences or humanities.
  • Literature review report.
  • Show creative thinking of solving problems related to individuals, groups, families, people with special needs within communities as well as work place.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the multi-cultural and multi-lingual nature of South African society.
  • Show evidence of oral and/or written presentation.

    Intergrated Assessment:
    The assessment of the learners' performance is both summative and formative for the Honours programme. Continuous evaluation of course-work contributes 50% toward the final mark.

    Continuous evaluation of course work for the Honours programmes is based on the following:
  • Written seminars.
  • Class presentation of seminar papers.
  • Peer evaluation and self-evaluation of performance.
  • Participation in class discussion and attendance.

    Written examination and a mini-dissertation form part of the final assessment for the Honours programme. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Horizontal Articulation:
  • Any related Honours Degree or Postgraduate Diploma at Level 8.

    Vertical Articulation:
  • Masters Degree at Level 9. 

  • MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The examinations at the Honours phase are externalised. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Staff members involved in the Honours programme have the Masters qualification as the minimum requirement. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY
