PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To offer a first degree in law complying with the minimum requirements of the Board for the Recognition of Professional Examinations in Law, allowing entry into the attorneys' profession, as well as vertical articulation to the LLB degree.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
  • After completion of two years of practical training demonstrated knowledge and understanding as candidate attorneys by providing such evidence in the processes and procedures undertaken
  • Written evidence is provided of knowledge and understanding which has demonstrated professional practice as attorneys
  • Legal processes engaged by attorneys are identified and analysed
  • Complete and accurate books are kept as records of processes undertaken
  • Legal problems are solved in accordance with best legal practices.

    Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved:

    Continuous evaluation by means of tests, assignments and examinations, including use of internal and external assessors.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    All B Proc courses qualify for exemption towards the B Juris and LLB degrees. Completed B Proc degree would exempt students registering for LLB degree from more than half of the courses prescribed for the latter. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    External moderation of the course in the final years, and assessment of student progress will be done by external moderators appointed by the Department on an annual basis and approved by Senate. Internal moderation will occur through the Department. The moderation body is the Council for Higher Education. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    The current lecturing staff of the Faculty of Law, the majority of whom hold doctors/masters degrees in law, will continue to act as internal assessors. External assessors will continue to be selected colleagues from the other SA universities specialising in the field concerned, as a general rule also holding doctors/masters degrees in law, and with lecturing experience extending over some years.
