PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

The aim of the Postgraduate Diploma in Media Management is to produce professionals who can contribute specialised business skills in the unique industry that is constituted by media enterprises.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

A candidate may be admitted to the Postgraduate Diploma in Media Management if the candidate:
Has been admitted to the degree or status of bachelor, provided that a student with a major in Journalism and Media Studies, or a credit in Management, will not be admitted.

Recognition of prior learning:

Persons who are able to give satisfactory evidence of relevant workplace experience (formal or informal) may be specifically exempted from the normal entrance for the degree and may register as Ad Eundem Gradum students.

The learner will be able to:
Demonstrate capability to manage the complexity of media enterprises within a given context and to be able to abstract and analyse what occurs in this sphere.

Specific outcomes:
Demonstrate an understanding of the debates over the variable relationship between the business and editorial sides of media enterprises.

Understand and apply models of economic analysis and planning to media enterprises.

Articulate the connections between policy, law and business as pertains to media enterprises.

Demonstrate a critical understanding of components of management as applied to media management.

Conduct research on a participant-observation basis in the arena of media management.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Learners should have the:

Ability to deliver oral and written presentations.
Ability to write course essays and research essay in appropriate formats and following set protocols, and applying theories and concepts taught in the course.
Ability to design and conduct research essay.
Ability to synthesise readings and lecture material, and to develop creative applications to a range of situations.

Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved:

1. Assessment procedures adhere to Rhodes University Assessment Policy.

2. Assessment entails three elements.

Continual formal assessment both formative and summative

Continual informal assessment (formative)

Formal end of course assessment (summative)

The course work on which continuous assessment is based includes work done individually and in groups, and may consist of combinations of tests, essays, practical reports and seminars.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

Learners with a Postgraduate Diploma in Media Management may proceed to a Master's degree at Rhodes or another university.

MODERATION OPTIONS

External examiners for all projects and examination papers will be experts in the field of media management and media research.

An evaluation of candidate's performance during an industry placement will be made by a supervisor in the given workplace.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

Academic staff of Rhodes University will be used as assessors. They will preferably have a PhD, but staff with at least an Honours degree and appropriate experience are acceptable.
