The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The aim of the MSS is to produce highly qualified researchers and scholars who can use their skills and knowledge to contribute to the national and international advancement of the social sciences.

Successful graduands will be capable of undertaking all aspects of research and will be able to continue with further postgraduate study. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Candidates should be in possession of an Honours degree in an appropriate discipline in order to qualify for admission to the degree. In exceptional cases candidates may be admitted to the programme with a Bachelor's degree or the equivalent.

Recognition for prior learning:

Persons who are able to give satisfactory evidence of their qualifications (formal or informal) may be specially exempted from the normal entrance requirements for the degree and may register as Ad Eundem Gradum students.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
The candidate should provide evidence of a high level of competency in a specialised field. Where the degree is research based, the candidate will provide evidence of the ability to undertake all aspects of research. This will include the preparation of a research proposal and the writing of a thesis which shows that the candidate:
  • Is sufficiently acquainted with the appropriate methods and techniques of research;
  • Is sufficiently acquainted with the relevant literature;
  • Has both satisfactorily understood the nature of the problem or topic and assessed the significance of the findings;
  • Has satisfactorily presented the results of independent research for the award of the degree in a manner which is satisfactory as to literary style and presentation, and free from grammatical and typographical errors;
  • When the degree is awarded with distinction the candidate must have produced evidence of real methodological and conceptual skills, clarity of exposition and development of argument, sound judgement, originality of approach, and some contribution to knowledge.

    Where the degree is course-work based, the candidate will provide evidence of an ability to assimilate and apply knowledge gained in the classroom to a variety of situations. This may be assessed by formative examinations, both written and oral, and in some cases by the examination of a minor dissertation on some topical aspect of the field of specialisation.

    Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved:

    The candidate should provide evidence of a specialised and high level of competence and knowledge.

    Formative assessment is provided by the supervisor and other University staff members on written and oral research reports. Summative assessment is provided on the basis of a thesis. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    1. Learners with an Honours degree from another university may be able to register for a Master's degree at Rhodes University.

    2. Learners with an MSS from Rhodes may be able to move to any other university in the country to undertake further postgraduate training.

    3. Learners with an MSS may be able to continue with a PhD, or they may be able to undertake other postgraduate training. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Internal and external moderators and examiners are used where the qualification is obtained by way of course work.

    In the case of a thesis, the learner will have at least one internal supervisor. The thesis will be examined by at least two examiners who are recognised as leaders in the field. At least one of the examiners will be from outside the University. Assessment conforms to the requirements and guidelines of Rhodes University as contained in the Higher Degrees Guide. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Academic staff of Rhodes University will be used as assessors. They will preferably have a PhD, but staff with a Master's degree and appropriate experience are acceptable.
