PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The qualification shall provide the qualifying learner/s with specific knowledge, skills and applied competencies in nursing and a basis for further and life-long learning, It shall also improve on the personal attributes of the learner providing status, recognition, marketability and employability enabling her/him to contribute profitably to the development and enhancement of society as well as the economy of the country. It shall provide recognized credentials for licensing. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners who register for this qualification should have met the requirements for level 1 to 4 with a minimum of 72 credits, of which at least 52 credits shall form the core and elective categories. 20 Credits shall be in the sub-fields of communication studies and language (sub-field 04) and 16 credits in physics, mathematics including numeracy, computer and life sciences (sub-field 10) and be in possession of a further Education and training certificate.

The qualification will also, through submission of portfolios of evidence, recognize formal and informal prior learning and work experience outside the National Qualification Frameworks level 1 to 4.

This shall consist of:
1) Formative continuous assessment in the form of written and oral tests, case studies, seminars, assignments portfolios, stimulations, work-place assessment and proficiencies.
2) Integrated Summative assessment in the form of written and oral examinations including practicals.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
1. Aspects covered in the fundamental learning i.e communication studies and language
(field 04) and physical mathematics, computer and life sciences (field 10), and in the
elective learning i.e, human and social sciences (field 07) and physical planning and
construction (field 12) shall form the basis for articulation with qualifications offered at
other institutions. Aspects covered in the core learning area i.e, health sciences and social services (field 09) and the experience gained in this training will form the basis for
articulation with other related health programmes in all institutions.


2. The qualifications toward which the B. Cur graduate may proceed to are: A nurse
(general, psychiatry, community)and midwife, an honours or master degrees in nursing, bachelor of arts in psychology and/or sociology, basic sciences degree, bachelor of
medicine and surgery, laboratory technician.

3. Exit level outcomes articulating with other qualifications are . . .
Diploma in nursing and other certification courses in nursing specialities (commonly
termed post basic additional qualifications in clinical nursing), enrolled nursing.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
All assessors must have completed a recognised and accredited nursing education and training programme which is at least pegged at NQF level 6 and be registered with the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance Body in accordance with criteria established for this purpose by an official Standard Generating Body.

As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012.
