PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The aim of the B Tech degree in pharmaceutical sciences is to develop expertise in various aspects of drug design; drug discovery; formulation of dosage forms; efficacy, safety and quality testing; management of drug supply and the promotion of the rational use of drugs.

Our national drug policy as well as the drug policies internationally call for the development of such expertise. Many of the employees in the pharmaceutical industry have qualifications in the natural sciences and would like to obtain further training and qualifications in the field of pharmaceutical science. This course enables such candidates to obtain specialised knowledge and skills in the field of pharmaceutical science.

However, it should be noted that candidates obtaining this qualification are not eligible for registration as pharmacists.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
National Diploma (First degree) or any equivalent qualification in an appropriate field at NQF level 6.

This qualification adds value to the learner as it provides for:
  • Access to higher qualifications;
  • Access to labour opportunities in specialised areas of the pharmaceutical industry and allied fields.

    Recognition of Prior Learning:

    Some recognition of prior learning and work experience is given in the selection procedure but the formal programme does not make provision for outcomes gained in fields other than those related to the pharmaceutical sciences and cognate disciplines.

  • RECOGNISE PREVIOUS LEARNING?

    QUALIFICATION RULES
    Formative assessment will include written tests and assignments and the summative assessment will be based on the end of module/subject examination. This qualification is awarded to the candidate, providing assessed evidence that the stated competence of the qualification as detailed in the specified outcomes, has been achieved.

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES
    The candidate will be capable of demonstrating understanding and knowledge in specific areas of pharmaceutical science.

    Specified Outcomes:

    Depending on the choice of modules/subjects, on completion of the programme the candidate will be able to:
  • Use the principles of science and technology to formulate a dosage form, ensure that it is of acceptable quality, package the product to ensure quality and register the product.
  • Understand the biopharmaceutical basis for dosage design.
  • Differentiate between the different types of clinical trials.
  • Understand and apply the principles of good clinical practice and good laboratory practice.
  • Understand and apply the essential principles in human resource management.

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
    Assessment will be based on assignments, tests and an examination at the end of each module/subject.

    MODERATION OPTIONS
    Accreditation visits by SERTEC will be arranged.

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS
    Criteria as required by SERTEC.

    Assessors should:
  • Be in the possession of relevant research qualifications in pharmaceutical science;
  • Have relevant experience in pharmaceutical science;
  • Be familiar with the Technikon educational system.

  • NOTES
    While South Africa still had Technikons, all of their qualifications were registered under the Committee of Technikon Principals. After the Technikons became Universities of Technology or merged with Universities, the qualifications were registered under each of these institutions, and the CTP qualifications fell away (hence the end date of 2006, above). Where relevant, replacement information is s
    hown in the table above.

    PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS QUALIFICATION:
    This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
