PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The qualifying candidate will be competent to provide managerial input and support with respect to the sustainable utilisation of marine resources and to undertake research activities in the field of marine science and technology.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
NQF 6 and/or recognition of relevant prior learning. Second Language skills at least at NQF 4.
Specified programme/departmental requirements will apply.

RECOGNISE PREVIOUS LEARNING?

QUALIFICATION RULES
The qualification will be awarded to a learner who has provided evidence to the satisfaction of the assessors that the stated competence of the qualification, as detailed in the specified outcomes, has been achieved, either through education and training in a single provider's learning programme, or through experience that complies with the stated specified outcomes.

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES

2. Effectively use research results and stocks assessments to provide input to the management of living marine resources.

3. Effectively carry out research projects.

4. Identify, explain and interpret the interaction between the exploited resources and their living and non-living environment.

5. Effectively communicate orally, technically and in writing.

Specified outcomes:

1. Apply the theory of survey design to stock assessment and general oceanographic surveys.
  • Describe the use of survey equipment and methods to achieve the desired survey results of stock assessment and oceanographic surveys on oceanographic surveys.

    2. Use the results of stock assessment surveys, together with economic, biological and physical data, to provide input towards the management of living marine resources.
  • Analyse and evaluate existing policies and make suggestions regarding the management of living marine resource.

    3. Demonstrate the ability to plan and produce a project proposal for a research project.
  • Demonstrate the ability to collect and analyse information and to present the results in a scientific format (Projects).

    4. Analyse and interpret the interaction between environmental factors (temperature, wind, oxygen, etc.) and living marine resources.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationship between marine organisms.
  • Explain the effects of human activity, such as fishing, on marine living and non-living resources in order to propose future management strategies for these resources.

    5. Demonstrate the ability to present research results.

    Critical outcomes:
  • identifying and solving marine science problems using appropriate techniques and principles.
  • working effectively with others as a member of a team in oceanographic or related commercial organisations.
  • collecting, analysing, organising and critically evaluating marine science information.
  • organising and managing oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively in an oceanographic environment.

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
    1. Given the constraints of time and personnel available, a statistically valid survey has to be correctly planned and demonstrated.
  • The kinds of equipment and techniques needed to effectively collect and analyse the data required in order to achieve the desired result have to be appropriately described, and/or utilised.

    2. Applicable and valid marine resource management data have to be submitted in order to serve as management sources.
  • The ability to make policy proposals towards living marine resource management has to be effectively demonstrated.

    3. The ability to plan and produce a project proposal for a research project has to be effectively demonstrated.
  • The ability to collect and analyse information and to present the results in a scientific format has to be correctly demonstrated.

    4. The interaction between environmental factors and living marine resources has to be correctly explained.
  • The effect of environmental factors on the lives of marine life has to be correctly described and explained.
  • The interrelationship between marine organisms has to be correctly explained.
  • The effects of fishing operations on marine resources have to be effectively clarified towards future management strategies for these resources.

    5. Oral and/or written presentations in which research results are being conveyed have to be valid and effective.

    Integrated assessment:

A combination of formative assessment methods (projects, assignments, practical activities, written tests, group discussions) and summative assessment methods (written examinations) are compiled and assessed. A graduate will be able to identify, assess, explain, interpret, discuss, compare and solve marine resource problems. Assessment practices should integrate these elements, combining appropriate applications of knowledge, skills and values to signify competence in a learner. Formative assessment will be continuous.

    NOTES
While South Africa still had Technikons, all of their qualifications were registered under the Committee of Technikon Principals. After the Technikons became Universities of Technology or merged with Universities, the qualifications were registered under each of these institutions, and the CTP qualifications fell away (hence the end date of 2006, above). Where relevant, replacement information is s
    hown in the table above.
