PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:

The purpose of a qualification in play production is to equip students with a broad understanding of the nature and function of theatre, drama and play production in relation to society and with specific and detailed knowledge of selected areas of historical and contemporary theatrical and dramatic practice. Practical and creative competence, investigative and critical analysis, as well as effective communication are all stressed. A particular focus is on the use of pay production and drama for education and development and the qualification is designed to enable students to create work both in community development and education and in the professional theatre. The programme also aims to engender the development of community arts. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Access to the qualification:

Applicants should have completed an undergraduate Bachelors degree or its equivalent and should have relevant work experience.

QUALIFICATION RULES 
A minimum of 128 Credits are to be completed for this one year qualification. 

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
Successful students will be able to demonstrate:

  • Communicate effectively using oral, written, visual and dramatic skills.
  • Use culture and dramatic arts effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards society and communities.
  • Be culturally and aesthetically sensitive across a range of social contexts.
  • Identify and solve problems in a responsible and creative manner.
  • Be able to produce a short play. 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:

    Assessment criteria are demonstrated fulfilment of the desired outcomes met through successful completion of all the components of the qualification and assessed through a range of methods including tests, assignments, seminars and formal examinations, in written and oral form. Assessment may include a short supervised project or case study.

    Integrated Assessment:

    The written tests, examinations and reports will serve to integrate and draw together all the material covered in all the components of the qualification. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification serves as an entry point to cognate masters qualification(s). 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    According to the University rules and procedures, all assessments at this level are externally moderated by appropriately qualified members of other universities or equivalent research institutions. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Internal and external assessors for the qualification will be selected on the basis of their recognised expertise in the modules being offered. The University assumes that, on the basis of its rigorous selection criteria for appointment of academic staff (who also have opportunities for staff development in assessment), staff are competent to assess students on the modules they teach.
