PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:

The purpose of this qualification is to equip graduates, who are already working in the broad filed of development, with values, knowledge and skills to enable them to engage at a high level in continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions beneficial to society. This qualification will provide South Africa with a cadre of engineering and development focussed graduates who have a sound basis of high level knowledge, competence and skills in engineering, technological and development arenas so that they may act as participants or leaders of project teams dealing creatively with social, developmental, environmental, engineering and physical design challenges associated with human activity. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Access to the Qualification:

Applicants should have completed an undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Bachelor of Engineering degree or a degree recognized by the Senate of the University. Applicants should also have relevant experience in a developmental field.

QUALIFICATION RULES 
A minimum of 128 Credits are to be completed for this one year qualification. 

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
Successful students will be able to:
  • Undertake or propose at a high level engineering, planning and/or developmental designs, procedures and/or processes that integrate first-principle solutions or code approaches with an understanding of the use of materials, all within the context of maximum economy and due regard for the environment.
  • Assist in planning, managing, construction, operation and maintenance of engineering and managerial systems or processes with due regard for the health and safety of personnel, and within the constraints of a budget.
  • Access, manipulate, process, provide and use spatially referenced data for the solution of engineering, planning or developmental problems.
  • Exercise leadership and managerial skills in the wider engineering and business environment, thus enhancing productivity and effectiveness. 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Assessment criteria are demonstrated fulfilment of the desired outcomes (above) met through successful completion of all the components of the qualification and assessed through a range of methods including tests, assignments, seminars and formal examinations, in written and oral form. Assessment may include a short supervised project.

    Integrated Assessment:

    The written tests and examinations serve to integrate and draw together all the material covered in all the components of the qualification. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification serves as an entry Point to the related to the qualification(s), MSc(Engineering), M(Engineering). 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    According to the University rules and procedures, all assessments at this level are externally moderated by appropriately qualified members of other universities or equivalent research institutions. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Internal and external assessors for the qualification will be selected on the basis of their recognised expertise in the modules being offered. The University assumes that, on the basis of its rigorous selection criteria for appointment of academic staff (who also have opportunities for staff development in assessment), staff are competent to assess students on the modules they teach.
