PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with competence in the acquisition, analysis, interpretation and application of principles and methods in the field of development facilitation, geared towards the eradication of poverty and inequality, within the context of multi-cultural rural and urban communities. The qualification focuses on the management of community development, with the aim of establishing self-reliant, empowered, sustainable communities, with a link between social and economic development.

Entry requirement is a Bachelors degree or its equivalent.

A minimum of 128 credits should be completed for this one year qualification. 

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
On completion of the qualification, the learner should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of community development.
  • Facilitate and co-ordinate the identification and analysis of poverty, developmental problems and inequalities; evaluation and reflection on this and coordinating finding appropriate solutions.
  • Work effectively with others as a member of a team and facilitate, co-ordinate and empower teams to become effective, sustainable community-based organizations, based on a relevant theoretical framework.
  • Enable communities to collect, analyse, organize and critically evaluate information gathered on poverty, developmental problems and inequalities, based on a relevant theoretical framework.
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately with individuals, groups and organizations in communities using visual, language, group work and mass media skills in oral or written formats.
  • Enable communities to initiate, establish and manage community organisations, co-ordinate community actions, manage conflict and negotiate with relevant role-players, based on a relevant theoretical framework.
  • Identify and analyse poverty and developmental problems, and to develop and manage projects to address poverty and developmental problems, by taking into account the White Paper on Social Welfare and the political and socio-economic influences in South Africa.
  • In co-operation with the community, explore, apply and reflect a variety of community development strategies on facilitation, empowerment and management, and to learn more effectively within a human developmental environment.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of human capacity at a local level, based on a relevant theoretical framework. 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Assessment criteria are demonstrated fulfilment of the desired outcomes (above) met through successful completion of course-work modules (assessed through a range of methods including tests, assignments and formal examinations, in written and a supervised short research project demonstrating familiarity.

    Integrated Assessment:

    Integrated assessment is carried out in written examinations and the submitted short research essays. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    On completion of this qualification the leaner may proceed to a other postgraduate qualifications such as masters at this or other universities. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    As is the University policy, assessment for all exit level modules, are externally moderated by appropriately qualified members of other universities or equivalent research institutions. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Internal and external assessors for the qualification will be selected on the basis of their recognised expertise in the modules being offered. The University assumes that, on the basis of its rigorous selection criteria for appointment of academic staff (who also have opportunities for staff development in assessment), staff are competent to assess students on the modules they teach.
