PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
  • To provide graduates who will be able to register as Candidate Professional Architects in terms of the Architectural Professions Act No 44 of 2000.
  • To provide learners competent in the field of architecture who can gain entry to doctoral studies. Such entry may be subject to further requirements.

  • Bachelor of Architectural Studies to an approved standard or an equivalent degree to an approved standard and one year post graduate practical experience.

    QUALIFICATION RULES 
    Minimum credits required at specific levels:
  • 256 credits are the minimum required at NQF Level 8. 

  • EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    The following exit level learning outcomes will be achieved:

    1. The ability to communicate theory, philosophy and/or practice of the discipline of architecture to others.

    2. The ability to integrate construction and structural theory in the physical context of the environment, and the abstract context of the historical and contemporary concerns of the discipline of architecture, and apply these concerns in a novel fashion to provide solutions to architectural problems.

    3. The ability to undertake independent research, particularly relating to the built environment.

    Critical Cross Field Outcomes:

    Upon successful completion of the course, the learner should be able to demonstrate the following cross field outcomes in terms of the following abilities:
  • To identify and solve problems in design or research relating to the build environment in which responsible decisions are arrived at as a consequence of critical and creative thinking.
  • To work together with others as a member of a team, an organisation, and a responsible and responsive member of the wider community.
  • To collect, analyse, organise, contextualise and critically evaluate information from a wide variety of primary and secondary sources.
  • To communicate ideas creatively using a range of visual, graphical and written media as well as in the spoken word.
  • To apply the human and natural sciences to the design process, showing understanding and sensitivity to potential effects of their design on the environment and on the well-being of users and other affected communities.
  • To carry out independent research involving both intellectual and more applied topics. 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:

    The degree to which these outcomes have been achieved will be assessed by demonstrating mastery of the knowledge and skills required in the following contexts:
  • Written and oral testing of students in all courses during and at the end of each module.
  • The submission of design portfolios supported by written documentation for scrutiny and oral examination to a panel of examiners comprising representative academics (internal and external), architectural practitioners and academics or professionals in related disciplines where appropriate.
  • The presentation and examination of a scholarly and academically rigorous research document relating to architectural design.

    Integrated Assessment:

    Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved:

    The abilities of learners will be assessed by means of portfolio examinations, simulations, written and oral examinations. In addition their work will be subject to continuous assessment in the form of tests, essays and architectural criticism. The Design Dissertation will be presented to a panel of assessors as a written document together with architectural representations in graphic and model form demonstrating a theoretically and scientifically informed solution to a complex design problem. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Learners with experience or qualifications equivalent to the Bachelor of Architectural Studies together with at least one year's practical experience may be admitted to the course.

    Credits from this course may be accepted in other postgraduate courses leading to candidature for professional status relating to the built environment.

    Learners completing this course would be eligible to register for doctoral degrees in architecture at this and other tertiary institutions, although some further stipulations may apply.

  • CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Assessors will be in possession of a professional degree in architecture or a related profession, or have at least a masters degree in a related discipline. They will have a minimum of five years' post-graduate experience in practice and/or teaching at a tertiary level. They will have peer recognition in their fields.
