PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose and Rational:


The purpose of the qualification is to:
  • Provide graduates in the field of Speech-Language pathology advanced knowledge and versatility in the diagnosis and treatment of communication disorders, to provide continued personal intellectual growth, advanced analytical, problem solving and research skills and advanced skills in oral and written communication.
  • Provide qualifiers with a broader vision of possibilities relating to the diagnosis and treatment of communication disorders within the sphere of public health, health services management and linguistic and cultural diversity.
  • Provide South Africa with postgraduate Speech-Language pathologists who are equipped with advanced theoretical information in line with current world-wide teachings and sufficient adaptability and flexibility to apply this knowledge in the South African and African context as clinicians, teachers and researchers.

    Access to the Qualification:

    The entry requirement is a four year degree: Bachelor of Communication Pathology or its equivalent. Applicants with a four year professional degree with allied specializations/discipline will also be considered. The qualifications should be appropriate for registration with Health Council of South Africa for registration as a Speech-Language Pathologist in South Africa.

    On completion of this qualification, the graduate should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of advanced theoretical and clinical concepts in the assessment and management of adult and childhood communication disorders and related cognitive and psycho-social aspects.
  • Demonstrate an understanding the relevance and applicability of assessment and management of communication disorders within the broader context of a diverse linguistic and cultural background.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the management of communication disorders within the context of improved health service delivery.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of statistical concepts in published research, and is able to interpret basic statistical results and perform elementary data description and analysis.
  • Prepare research proposals and undertake research, with appropriate supervision, covering a range of topics related to communication and its disorders.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Associated Assessment Criteria:

    Assessment criteria are demonstrated fulfilment of the desired outcomes (above) met through successful completion of all components of the qualification and are assessed through a range of methods including tests, assignments and formal examinations, in written and oral form, and the research project.

    Integrated Assessment:

    Integrated assessment is carried out in written examinations and in the research project. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    On completion of this qualification, the graduate may proceed to a doctoral degree in the same or allied discipline at this University or other institutions. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The University policy is that assessment at exit level (including this level 8 & above qualification) is externally moderated by appropriately qualified members of other universities or equivalent research institutions. Further, the dissertation is assessment internally by an academic member of staff other than the direct supervisor and by an expert external to the University. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Internal and external assessors for the qualification will be selected on the basis of their recognised expertise in the modules being offered. The University assumes that, on the basis of its rigorous selection criteria for appointment of academic staff (who also have opportunities for staff development in assessment), staff are competent to assess students on the modules they teach.
