PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:

The purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifiers with the necessary knowledge, specific skills and applied competence such that they will meet the requirements for specialisation in general medicine of the College of Medicine of South Africa. This includes a minimum period of supervised experiential learning and success in the College of Medicine examination for the FCP (Fellowship of College of Physicians). This qualification forms part of the credentialing process for registration as specialists in internal medicine registered as such by the Health Professions Council of South Africa. It will also provide qualifiers with the necessary foundation to conduct and present an independent research project. Further more broadly for South Africa, the qualification will increase the numbers of well-trained competent general physicians to serve the community and a smaller number who have begun to contribute to scholarly activity in the field. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Access to the qualification:

Applicants should have completed an undergraduate Bachelors degree such as MBChB, MBBCh or equivalent qualification acceptable to the Health Professions Council of South Africa for registration as a medical practitioner in South Africa. Two years of supervised medical practice inclusive of the internship year.

A minimum of 128 Credits are to be completed for this one year qualification. 

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
Successful students will be able to:
  • Assess, diagnose, investigate and manage general medical problems.
  • Conduct and present independent research.
  • Demonstrate an ability to manage general medical problems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge regarding physiology and pathogenesis of adult disease.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of investigations relevant to adult diseases.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the management of adult diseases. 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Assessment criteria are demonstrated fulfilment of the desired outcomes (above) met through successful completion of all the components of the qualification and assessed through a range of methods including tests, assignments, seminars and formal examinations, in written and oral form. Assessment may include a short supervised project and hospital practice.

    Integrated Assessment:

    The written tests, examinations and reports will serve to integrate and draw together all the material covered in all the components of the qualification. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification serves as an entry point to cognate PhD at this and other universities. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    According to the University rules and procedures, all assessments at this level are externally moderated by appropriately qualified members of other universities or equivalent research institutions. Dissertations and Theses are examined by experts external to the University, and one academic staff member of the University other than the supervisor of the research project. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Internal and external assessors for the qualification will be selected on the basis of their recognised expertise in the modules being offered. The University assumes that, on the basis of its rigorous selection criteria for appointment of academic staff (who also have opportunities for staff development in assessment), staff are competent to assess students on the modules they teach.
